Large Green Meteor Fireball Nevada, Arizona 30APR2011...

Emails From:
Update On Cornwall AZ Report From Brenda H.:
The most exciting thing that has happened to me in a long while occurred as I was returning home a bit ago (Saturday night 8:30 pm April 30-2011.) I saw a bright flash to the side of me and looked over and lo and behold there was a large bright green/gold/orange orb falling quickly to the ground, (like a falling star would appear) but it was big and the first thing I thought of was it must be a meteorite,  but then my next thought was, could it be a UFO? it disappeared behind the hill and I heard no crash nor did I see an explosion. I don't know if meteorites have colors like that, but it was a brilliantly colored green (almost emerald) with traces of orange and yellow. There really wasn't a tail, the orange/gold colors were surrounding it.  If I were comparing it to the size of a shooting star I'd say that it was magnified by that size by at least 10 times and it was in a NE direction ( I was facing the Sedona area) rapidly falling towards the ground when it was no longer visible because of the hills.
Blessings,
Brenda

Stormie Ulibarri-Western NM:
Hi there.  On April 30th, 2011, my brother and I were traveling West on the 60 from Socorro, NM heading home to Arizona.  The time was approximately 9ish, not positive.  We weren't far past the VLA, approximately 50 miles.  We were driving extremely slow due to the massive amount of elk on the road.  I looked up and saw what I thought was a falling star and pointed it out to my brother.  This did not burn out the closer it got, like most do.  It stayed fully illuminate, had a tail and appeared close enough to see the gases fuming off of it.  It was bright white with blue.  It travel West to North as indicated by the Albuquerque sighting on your site.  It did impact, as we witnessed a flash of light, most closely compared to the bright flash of a camera.  Over the tree tops after impact, a red light could be seen and then another. Don't know if this was fire or what not.  I've read a lot of accounts on the sighting and I wonder if we are all talking about more than one meteorite.  I witnessed approximately six falling stars that night, or more correctly meteor showers.  Possible more than one hit.  I would swear this one hit in New Mexico and not far from where we were at.  It was close enough to scare the hell out of me.  Hope this helps.

Sarah and Patrick:
We live in Las Vegas, Nevada and just saw a huge, bright green shooting star with a long trail behind it. At first we thought it was a plane crashing because it was so large and bright green. It was amazing!! This happened at approximatly 8:40 p.m. PST on April 30, 2011.

Rusty In Sedona, AZ:
last night in Sedona at a star party we saw a very large fireball raise low towards the ground and after it disappeared over the mountain there was a flash like it had hit and exploded. It was amazing. So big.

Christopher Hunt-Las Vegas, NV:
Driving back from picking up Pizza last night, I saw a Greenish meteor over Las Vegas.
I live in the Southwest part of town with a clear view of the strip.  I had just turned and was driving East towards the strip in a residential area and saw the meteor fly over me at a slight angle going roughly from southwest to northeast.  The track went over the strip (from my vantage point) towards Lake Mead.  I then saw it break into at least 3 pieces that then tailed toward the ground.  The light at the point that it broke seemed to be a green flash.

Seen in Cornville AZ last night about 8:30pm April 30, 2011.
It was in the NE sky over by the Sedona area. It fell fast and disappeared behind the hilly terrain. An amazing site. It was like a falling star but very big. No sounds were made.

David Russel-Arizona:
I was driving north on I17 around mile marker 272 in Northern Arizona around 8:45pm. Saw the object seem to drop out of the sky heading quickly northwest and then disappear over the mountainous terrain, only saw it for a couple of seconds. I remember green, my wife says there was some orange at the tail.

Sarah E.-Las Vegas NV:
Ten minutes ago my husband and I saw the biggest brightest green shooting star/meteor ever!  It lasted a really long time and was the largest brightest we have ever seen.

My name is Jenalyn P. and I live in Macon, Georgia. We were heading southbound on the 475 when we saw what looked like a shooting star, until it got closer. As it did, we could see the actual rock and flame trail. I assume it hit somewhere because the sky lit up a few seconds after it left our sights. We couldn't hear anything, so I'm not too sure.   your assumption is probably correct! thank you Jenalyn

Apr 30 2011, 9:22 AM Michelle Mortz Nowalinski:
I see the meteor last night in callaway Fl. I reported it to the American Meteor Society. It was 9pm central time. It was White, red and orange with a fiery tail that lingered afterward.. And so bright, it looked like the sun falling from the sky, and very close. I had never seen anything like it. I was driving south and it was falling south east, I heard no noise. you can see my exact location on my report on other site along with a ton of other sitings. Thanks for the interesting site.   you're welcome and thank you Michelle!

Saw brilliant white fireball falling from NE to due east over Marianna, FL It was 45 degrees above horizon and fell to horizon due East of where I was. It was brilliant white with greenish yellow tail. Awesome!Apr 29 2011, 10:57 PM
Guest47 (guest): Time was 9:03 pm CT   thanks Anthony!

Apr 29 2011, 10:42 PM Guest92 (guest):
I saw it driving east on I-10, 15 miles west of Marianna. It looked very low (disappeared beneath the treeline). It was just ahead and to the left of us (northeast sky?) and burnt bright in orange and green. Amazing sight.
Apr 29 2011, 10:42 PM
Guest92 (guest): that was Ryan C (guest92)...time was just around 10pm  thank you Ryan!

Apr 29 2011, 10:00 PMGuest117 (guest): I witnessed the fireball in the sky around 10pm tonight, I live in Camden County, GA in the area called Tarboro,I was facing west and the fireball seemed blueish/white at the front and flaming from the tail. It moved across the western sky right to left. It was very bright and the sky sort of flickered before the meteor showed up, sort of like a dim flash across the whole sky then I saw it, it moved in the sky for probably 8 seconds of so. It was great after I got over the shock of seeing it! In a very remote area where it's completely dark it was kind of a freakish thing to see!!!

Apr 29 2011, 9:17 PM: Harleykira (guest): gosh its about 9:55 pm in Bradenton florida and i saw very bright reddish, orange flame in the sky and i wish i have a camera with me i would take a pic of it,its was HUGE and we thought a plane but i just found out it not.its so neat

Apr 29 2011, 8:42 PM: Megamartha Kick-butt Wykydtron: Driving in the Tucker, GA, USA area on highway 285 going south, myself and my roommate witnessed a green flaming object falling in the sky very quickly towards the ground. Looked too large to be a firework, couldn't tell how far away it was. We would both REALLY like to know what this object was, the flame trail behind it was definitely green, with some orange in the center. Possibly a satellite part or something else? oh, the time was about 10:00 pm, and the flaming object was travelling (from my vantage point_ southeastward.

Apr 29 2011, 9:09 PM: OneEarWillie (guest): I saw a large fireball at about the same time over Kingsland, GA. In the western sky. it was the largest/brightest meteorite I've ever seen. I could see burning bits trailing off behind it. Looked bright white to me with reddish trail of fragments

Emails From:
Dick Marti-Tifton, GA:
I was outside in my backyard observing the region around Spica in the constellation Virgo and was using my 20x80 parallelogram-mounted binoculars. I noticed something out of the corner of my eye and pushed the binoculars away and looked up. It was a large and bright meteor, predominately green in color, finishing with bright orange. Estimated magnitude was minus 11. I first saw it near Regulus. It moved rather slowly for a meteor and took about 5 seconds to flare out east of Spica. It must have been visible somewhat longer than that, however. If there was a sonic boom associated with it, I missed it because I immediately went into the house to tell my wife. My location is Tifton, GA, 31d 28' 33" North, 83d 29' 29" West and local time was 10:04pm eastern. There was no explosion.

Anonymous In Lake Park, GA:
My daughter was walking the dog and she seen this Orange light with a yellow tail. I walked out the other way about two minutes later and heard a big boom that shook the house. What was it?

Jim In Summerfield Florida: Five of us were coming back from Walt Disney World April 29th, 2011 traveling north on US 27/441 near Leesburg at about
10:00 - 10:10 pm saw a large meteor.  Burning bright coming in on about a 45 degree angle with a nice tail trailing behind.
Moving from approximately NW to SE.  We could see it for about 5 seconds then lost it from behind the tree line.  Don't know if
it impacted or not.

Tom Strouder-Leesburg FL: About 10:04 pm 4/29/2011 looking North from the Leesburg area of Florida, I saw the northern sky light up illuminating the ground like a military flare. The object appeared in the N/W about 70 degrees above the horizon and traveled towards the horizon to the N/E.  It had a bright white head and a long gaseous tail about 40 degrees in length, illuminating between green and blue.

Dr. John Randallson-Lakeland, GA: Sitting and watching TV when the whole house suddenly shook. It was as if a bomb had went off outside. Went outside and my uncle was standing there saying that he just saw a bright flashing light at about tree-height falling to the ground. Took place a few miles north of Lakeland, Georgia.

Anonymous Writes: green red fireball fri 29 april north of Tampa moving from northeast to southeast aprox 11:00 PM curious any other witnesses

cderrick1: Ocoee FL:  My wife and I observed the fire ball shortly after 10 PM. Our viewing has the ball headed almost straight down, about 10 degrees west of due north, and appeared to burn out just before tree line. There was no noise with our viewing.

Kevin Felton-Americus, Ga:  around 10 pm last night we saw this flaming greenish bright object falling across the sky moving from west to east. When I posted on Facebook what I had just witnessed several other people commented saying that they saw the same thing down in the Albany, Ga area. We didn't hear any sounds after seeing it though.

ChemDoc-Bronwood, GA: I was stargazing with a group of my college students when we saw the object around 10pm.  We were near Bronwood, GA (at 31.8310°N, 84.3640°W). When I looked up, it was at roughly azi 160, alt 80, travelling East.  It kept getting brighter and brighter until it developed a head and tail.  It “evaporated” just before it reached the treeline near us (SSE of us).  15 of us saw it.

Charlie Eavenson-Covington, GA: At about 10:05 pm April 29, 2011, 14 of us were sitting around a campfire outside our home near Covington, GA (30 miles southeast of Atlanta). One person said "Look at that, look at that!" We all turned to look south & saw a very bright white-green brilliant light, falling from southwest to southeast at a low angle. Suddenly it erupted into a huge orange fireball, then it disappeared just above the treeline. The person who saw it first probably observed it for 7 or 8 seconds. We've watched lots of meteor showers & have never seen anything like this. We heard no sound & we didn't observe a persistant trail, just a "tail" while it was illuminated.

Jean Brown-Central SC: We live in central South Carolina, the weather was clear and cooling. On April 29th at about 10:05pm my husband and I were in the backyard, looking at all the stars in a clear sky.  We were facing south, when from the north, low in the sky came this object that grew brighter due to the flame behind it and continued in a low fashion out of sight.  It was orange and looked like it almost had a tail like a comet.  It was gone quickly and no sound was with it.  Lasted just 4-5 seconds.  Space garbage?  J&WB

Anonymous In Valdosta, GA: My name is Jami and I also live in Valdosta, Ga. I was standing in my driveway around 10pm and saw what looked like a firework going off abvove my house. It was bright blue in color and did resemble a strobe light. My husband had just gotten home and I asked him if he saw anything and he said no. But about two minutes later is when we both heard a big boom. My first thought was an airplane crashing.

Amelia T. Date: 4/29/11 Time: around 10:00 pm Location: Valdosta, GA
My roomate and I were facing Due East and the object fell from left to right, high in the sky. It was VERY much brighter than a full moon. We saw what seemed like lightening or a VERY bright flash in the sky, then we saw the object, cylindrical with a flaming tail split into two. It sputtered out and then fell behind the trees. Almost like a flare. It seemed very close to us and then about two minutes later we heard a HUGE boom.
Someone else I know said that it shook his whole house.  thank you Amelia, GREAT report!

Sandy M. Cottondale, FL: Saw falling star as I facing due east toward Marianna, FL  It was falling from NE of me to due East. It was brilliant white with greenish yellow flames coming from the back.  It was still burning as it dissapeared behind the trees.
Awesome!  Would like to find out more about what it was and where it ended up.

Ali Y. In Georgia:
I witnessed the fireball in the sky around 10pm tonight, I live in Camden County, GA in the area called Tarboro, out in the country where they sky is bright with stars :).  I was facing west and the fireball seemed blueish/white at the front and flaming from the tail.  It moved across the western sky right to left.  It was very bright and the sky sort of flickered before the meteor showed up, sort of like a dim flash across the whole sky then I saw it, it moved in the sky for probably 15 seconds of so, pretty long compared to any I've ever seen.  Never seen one that big EVER! It was awesome and I hope someone got a picture of it!

Tim M. In Florida:
April 29 2011 Just after 10:00pm Gainesville, FL I was facing north. The fireball was fall from west to east. I have seen many meteor showers over the years and this was the most impresive one I have ever seen.

Ken I. In Alabama:
I live in Foley, AL at 9:15 pm central time I saw a huge green fireball it was moving very fast no sound or trail. I spotted it at the top of the tree line from there it went straight down.

Sarah D. In Florida:
Just after 10pm I saw the large fireball falling from the sky as well! I'm in tampa, fl. I was on Nebraska ave at the intersection of Fowler ave....zip is 33612. I was facing north, saw the fireball slightly to the left putting it in the NWN direction. It didn't appear green to me, just orange. It flickered but I didn't see anything fly off of it. It was fairly bright...bright enough that I thought it was in tampa somewhere (glad I didn't try to go find it).
Was it found? I'm so intrigued!

Laura H. In Florida: 4/29/2011 about 10pm
my husband and I were driving north on I-275 from St. Petersburg to Tampa.  My husband and I had just crossed the Dale Mabry exit and I noticed out the windshield to my left (north west) what looked like an orange fireball falling from the sky.  I made comment to my husband as to what it was. It disappeared behind the trees before he saw it.  It looked like it might have landed in Tampa but I did not see or hear any explosions.  Glad to see that I am not loosing my mind.

Paul R.-Kingsland, GA...
Shortly after 10pm EDT my family noted a VERY bright fireball in the Western sky over Kingsland, GA.   I could clearly see the intense burning meteor shedding off smaller glowing bits as it streaked through the sky.  thank you Paul!

Central FL Gulf Coast Green Meteor Fireball 27APR2011...

Email From Chris Thomas-South Of Gainsville, FL:
Well, I did some searching to see if someone else saw what I did.
I’m glad to be able to substantiate the email from Griffin W and what he saw when north of Gainesville.  As I recall it was about 10 PM. I was parked in a Lutz neighborhood (90 min south of Gainesville)  I was looking nearly due North and saw the meteor first travel from the West to the East.   I found the whole thing unusual, it was falling very slowly or maybe meteors are slower than shooting stars?  I now suspect it was as close to me as it originally appeared considering where Griffin saw it from.  It was massive, and clearly burning and sparking.  A perfect comparison would be like a glittering round from a roman candle firework.  I recall seeing little of the tail but found it also unusual that just as it dipped into the tree line during the 2 second event the sky flashed green before I would estimate it made impact.  The flash wasn’t brilliant but reminiscent of when a power pole transformer explodes in the distance.  There was no sound.  Thanks for this resource, hope my account helps.

Email From Val In Pinellas County FL:
It was around 11pm EST in pinellas county fl. I was driving and i saw through my windshield a HUGE falling star?? It was very low in the sky and very very bright with a definite tail. It appeared to be out of the north-northwest sky. I love to watch falling star showers but this was like none i have ever seen before. really cool!!!

Confirmation Email From Griffin W...I was driving South on I - 75 about 1/2 miles north of Gainesville Florida at about 10:50pm and saw a greenish, blueish fireball with a white tail falling from the sky. It came into my view in the top right of my wind shield (NE) and fell to the SW across my line of sight and the burned out 30 degrees above the horizon. The whole thing lasted 1 - 1/2 seconds from start to finish. I guess this could have been the meteor reported in Sarasota (because that is the direction it was falling) but it seemed to be closer than that to where I was in Gainesville. Hope this helps.   thank you Griffin!

Georgia, South Carolina Meteor Fireball 23APR2011...

From Fred-Central SC Coast...1:53am 4/23/2011 - Biggest fireball I've ever seen. Just happened to be looking over the tree line towards the South in Summerville, SC. Saw this fireball streak across the sky West to East with bright yellow-orange flames that quickly disappeared. Wow - never saw anything like it. Expected to hear a boom that never came.

Meteor Fireball Colorado 22APR2011...

Comment From Anonymous...I was fishing at the Boulder Reservoir at around midnight I saw a large fireball approximately on the north shore of the reservoir. What is the meteorological term for what I saw? A meteor burning out in the atmosphere?   yes. If it was brighter than Venus it's called a fireball. If it appeared to fragment, a bolide. Thanks for reporting!

E-mail From Kirstie M.... Hi, I was driving home from the airport last night when I witnessed a huge fireball (white, yellow and blue) plummeting rapidly to the earth just W of I-25 and N of Highway 7. Pretty amazing, I've been trying to find information on it and my friend just sent this link. Obviously others saw it because there was plenty of light traffic on I-25. Please let me know if you can find out anything else. Thanks,   thank you Kirstie! Likely a bright Lyrid Meteor (annual Lyrid meteor shower currently underway)

E-mail From Tim H...Tonight at 11:45  driving north on I 25 near Ft. collins, CO I saw a meteor streak down from south to north extremely fast and brilliant green.

Breaking Meteor News...Large Green Meteor Fireball IA, IN, KS, MO, NE 8:47pm CDT 20APR2011...

PICS/VIDS OF THIS EVENT...Please post them to wxtx01@gmail.com !

E-mail From Chase C. In Iowa...Hello I just found you website and I'm glad I did because I had no idea what I had seen.  I was traveling on I-80 west bound at 8:45 pm right outside Altoona Iowa.  I was moving at 70 mph when I saw a very bright ball almost like a Roman Candle in the sky traveling from right to left, it passed right into my vision at the top left of my windshield and continued right underneath the cloud cover and a very high rate of speed.  It was not very far above the horizon and was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in the sky.  Almost the color of a sparkler or firework kind of bright blueish color.  It moved right over the city of Altoona before the light went out with only a very very small vapor trail to be seen behind it.   I heard no sound as my windows were up and the radio was on.   What a site to see.

Apr 22 2011, 4:20 PM
Guest362 (guest): On 4/20/11 at about 8:45pm in Andover Kansas - I saw a bright green streak in the sky. I was looking almost due North. It traveled from west to east in the sky.

From Emily A, Raytown, MO...Oh man... I'm so glad I found your site.  I was so perplexed by what I saw!  On the night of the 20th, sometime between 8:50-9:00pm, I saw a flaming ball go across the sky heading west-ish (I am terrible with direction, so that is a guess).  I saw it burning orange, blue, and greenish, with a sparking/sparkling tail.  I only got to see it for a few seconds.  I live in an apartment complex and lost visual as it passed behind another building.  I live in Kansas City, MO, near the Raytown area.  At first I thought it was a firework or a flare, but there was no pop (like a firework) and it's tragectory was straight and angled slightly downward, not arched like it would have been if it were something launched from the ground.  The best I could figure was that it was a meteor, but I'm so glad to have that confirmed.  How cool!!    glad you found us Emily and thanks for your report!

Jeff Fortney-Lee's Summit, MO I also saw the meteor/comet around 8:50 PM on April 20, 2011. It was green, orange and white with streaks of fire/sparks falling off the tail. Heading NE to SW very quickly. It burnt out as it approached the horizin. Very beautiful.   thanks Jeff!

John C. Writes...I saw this from Kansas City.  Biggest, longest that I have ever seen (and I'm not young).  Time: 8:47 pm.  Northwest sky heading ffrom NE to SW.  Had a green tint. thank you John!

Email From Amy M....We saw the meteor last night from New London Iowa at around 8:45pm. My family and I were driving home, heading south, and stopped the car so we could all witness the huge bright green burning ball falling in the western sky. It was nothing any of us had ever seen. Very awesome! I had to come into work this morning and google it to see if anyone else had seen the awesome sight we were so lucky to see!  thanks Amy!

Large Bright Meteor Fireball North Texas 18APR2011...Captured By 2 Sentinel Cameras...

From Chris C. N Of Ft. Worth...
At approximately 3:35AM CST I saw something shoot across the sky seeming very close!!!
I am no professional, but have watched all the major Eclipse's, Comets, and meteor showers in recent history. North of Fort Worth, Texas while having a smoke I saw what at first I thought was possibly a bottle rocket (because it was seemingly so close and so bright) shoot from about 315NW to 60NE according to my compass.
Location: 32.960554,- 97.277376
I quickly realized it was either a meteor/comet/shooting star due to it's speed and seemingly straight trajectory! It had a long white and yellow tail with a bit of red, and disappeared from my vision before I could stand up. I searched the web for any meteor showers or news on activity in the sky, and just found your site. I have seen many celestials Mass's streak across the sky, but none so close and so bright and clear as I have tonight. I thought for a split second it may even strike the earth!!! (again that's how near it seemed)
I heard no noise and can't think of what else to tell u to describe it.
Please let me know what u find out, it was truly an awesome experience.

Mary H. In Long Beach...
I went out front of my house and looked up to see a bright yellowish red fireball with what looked like trails on the top and bottom. The only way I can describe it is if you took a rock and threw it but could see the wind disturbance. I was looking toward the beach with is south because I live in Long Beach, Ca. I think it was around 9:15. It actually looked like it burnt out for a second but then came back to life just for another second. CRAZY. I'm always seeing strange things in the sky over the Port. Oh...this "fireball" didn't make any sound.

Kendra S. In San Diego...
Me and two friends sitting on the patio in downtown San Diego witnessed what we thought was a shooting star, it was red orange and yellow with a cone shaped tail,  it disappeared and then quickly reappeared. It happened at approx.931 pm.  Amazing sighting!!!

Guest86 (guest): Oxnard, CA @ 21:30: Hot orange core with a HUGE nimbus of flames ... looked like a flower ... for several seconds. The size of my fist at arm's length! Moving quite slowly from my vantage point. Disappeared and then re-appeared ~2-3 seconds later as an orange brick-shaped ember, without the flames. This phase lasted only ~1-2 seconds and it was gone. Then, two MINUTES later, a loud rumble / explosion / sonic boom sound that rattled the windows in the house. Unlike anything I've ever witnessed before!

Anthony In San Gabriel...
Saw a very bright red light over San Gabriel Valley with gray/red and purple fish tail moving very fast. Shortly after passing over it flickered and disappeared.
