Meteor News...Iowa Meteor Fireball Observed DEC30,2010...

The Northeast and Midwest US continue to experience elevated fireball activity. Here is the latest fireball report from a reader of ELPALLSKY... this time from Iowa:

Posted Dec 31 2010, 2:32 PM
Guest566 (guest): I live in Des Moines, IA. and around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 30 I happened to be looking out the window of our house and saw a huge fireball going across the sky from east to west. It had a firey tail and I could watch it for several seconds before it went below the tree line. I have been trying to find out if anyone else saw it and what it was.

I live in Des Moines Ia and on 01/01/11 at about 7:30pm CST, I saw a meteor going from South to North, it was amazing!! I so wished I could have recorded it. It looked so close and seemed to last a good 7-10 seconds. I have been looking to see if anyone else in Des Moines saw it also. It was a bright orange color and then went white. I thought for sure I heard it hit the ground with a loud thud.

live in Omaha Nebraska, was traveling eastbound on I-80 just on the western edge of DesMoines about 6:30 pm on Dec. 30, 2011, and saw the same fireball, traveling aprox SW to NE very bright and very distinct fiery tail, it almost brought traffic on the interstate to a stop. Never seen anything like it but i did see 2 other falling stars within 10 minutes of seeing this one.

We were 1 - 1.5 miles north of scenic overlook at Tioga, PA, driving south on US route 15. 12/30/2010. Approx. 2:00pm EST. West side of the road. Anything reported in this area?

Multiple Reports Coming In To ELPALLSKY Of More Bright Northeast US Fireballs Seen DEC29,2010...

On the heels of a large fireball seen Dec. 28th at ~6:45pm EST over several NE USA coastline states, a pair of bright fireballs and a possible third has apparently occured in the same region...and just one night later. The following are posts to ELPALLSKY Dec. 29th, 2010.

Guest232 (guest): I'm glad to know I wasn't seeing things! I too saw the 12/29 fireball around 8:40-8:45pm - looking west. I am in eastern PA, near Allentown. I was driving home through town, stopped at a stop sign, and when I looked to my left (west) to check for oncoming traffic, I saw the bright yellow-white fireball with a very short blue-green tail fall, as if headed straight down to the horizon. I only caught a second of it before my view was obstructed by buildings - but, wow! What a glorious second it was!
From E-mail:

Email Posts To ELPALLSKY Describing Large East Coast Fireball DEC28, 2010...

Here are some selected e-mails I recieved regarding the Dec. 28 East Coast Fireball Event...

From Anonymous:
I live in Gilbertsville Pa. I saw two white flashes of light that lit up the sky. Then a huge entrail that lasted about 2 seconds. After about a minute I heard 3 loud booms like something impacted the earth.

From Anonymous:
We live near Winchersr Va. My wife saw this from our car through the windshield. We were traveling NE and my wife witnessed a bright light followed by an apparent explosion, resulting in mutliple bright objects moving horizontaly in an apparent NW direction. I am posting our approximate coordintes at sighting below if you are attempting a more detailed location and/or path by triangulation. I would approximate altitude of about 30 above horizon.

78 08 W

From Natacha (Canada):
Hi! My name is Natacha. I'm from Montréal (Canada). I saw the meteorite in the sky yesterday when i rolled in my car on Jean-Talon street. The apparition during about 5 secondes. It was very, very weird...Immediatly I called my boyfriend.
Excuse me for my english, I speak french :)
ELPALLSKY Response...NATACHA: Il n'y a pas de quoi

From Anonymous:
I was driving west on rt 90 in Upton MA (south of Northborough) when I saw what looked like the bright white object falling from the sky with a long bright tail. After several seconds, the object turned from bright white to neon green. I had never seen such a thing. It looked like it was relatively close and was falling down toward the ground. It disappeared into the tree line. I thought for sure it had fallen in Worcester county somewhere, although for all I know it broke up over Canada somewhere. :)

From Rita Casady:
I was on R.I. Rte 95 heading SW about 6:45 p.m. in Coventry when I saw the "thing" breach the sky like a bright white light, from my left, falling to my right. I smiled thinking OOH, a falling star..as I started to make a wish, it actually turned green, surrounded by a coppery color and a little tail of color. It is the coolest thing I ever saw in the sky.

From Anonymous:
We saw a large flash of light over a range of hills while driving East on the I-76 in PA, just past Lancaster. We didn't know what it was! The time posted above is right when we saw the flash, but the hills obstructed our view of the source of the light. It appeared to be East/NorthEast.

From Anonymous:
While driving West on Rte. 9 in Hadley, MA. at approximately 6:50 P.M. I saw a large white fireball/meteor with a long tail suddenly appear in the sky coming in at a downward angle for a landing. It was in view for only a few seconds, but boy what a sight! It looked big and I thought it would have landed somewhere close by. WOW!

From Anonymous:
We saw it! I live in Queens, NYC. I was searching for anyone else that saw it...that's how I came across this site!

From Karen:
My fiance and I traveling on 287 S. in NJ near Boonton Exit . Saw the metoer for a few seconds. Bluish green in color Brilliant bright long tail. Heading Northwesterly. Absolutely beautiful

From Brian Simmons Greencastle, PA:
I was driving east on US 40 west of Hagerstown, MD and saw a greenish white light in the ENE sky--light(s) like that of an aircraft, with the expectation that it was going to land at HGR (the local airport). It then exploded mid-air in fragments with the light quickly fading (unlike a firework). Looked like a cheaply done explosion in an old Sci-Fi movie.
My nephew's sister over on Maryland's Eastern Shore (Denton) also said she saw it when I posted to my Facebook last night.

From Anonymous:
I saw it in southern Midlothian/Chesterfield County, VA (US 360 & Swift Creek Reservoir) at 6:45/6 pm. It was very bright, greenish with a yellow train and had fragments come off it during the five seconds I could see it. I was looking ENE and the meteor appeared to be tracking from SE to NW just above the tree line. Very nice show and one of three I've seen in my area. I Facebooked all of the news stations here, but have gotten no reaction nor heard it reported. It'll get mentioned if they have video, I suppose.

From Anonymous:
was driving southbound on I-81 just north of Scranton, PA. I had been skiing that day on Elk Mountain. I looked up when I saw what I thought at first was a shooting star, but quickly realized that it was far from that. The ball of fire was amazing with a jet stream of purple, orange and white flame. I couldn't believe what I saw. My friend in the passenger seat thought it might have been a plane crashing because the fire was so intense. It seemed to be so close and certainly looked as if it was going to crash just over the next hill. It disappeared behind the hill and tree line but not before it flew in front of the car for almost 10 seconds.

We are still in need of video. Please post here if you have, know of, or have seen local TV video of this event. Thanx...ELPALLSKY

Only The Second Winter Solstice Total Lunar Eclipse In History !!!

    From SpaceWeather.com Posted 12/19/10
RARE LUNAR ECLIPSE: The lunar eclipse of Dec. 20-21 falls on the same date as the northern winter solstice. Is this rare? It is indeed, according to Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory, who inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is Dec. 21, 1638," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on Dec. 21, 2094."

WHEN TO LOOK: The total eclipse lasts more than an hour from 12:41 am to 01:53 am MST on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21st. Any time within that interval is a good time to look. For other time zones, consult Shadow & Substance's animated eclipse.

Meteor News...Awesome Geminids Video From North Texas 12/13-14/10...

Posted from Kevin Palivec Hawley, Texas
This video is compiled from individual captures during the overnight peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower Dec. 13th and 14th, 2010. The camera has an approximate field of view of 40 degrees and points North toward Oklahoma City, OK from Hawley (near Abilene) Texas. Mid video, Orion appears, then sinks toward the Southwest. As the Earth's position within the stream of asteroidal debris changes, so does the apparent radiant and subsequent direction of travel of the meteors. This video is quite stunning and my thanks goes to Kevin Palivec of Hawley, Texas (c) Kevin Palivec 2010-2011. Click play and enjoy the show!

Meteor News...Geminids Image Updated 12/19/10 at 01:48 MST (08:48 UTC)...

The desert skies of El Paso, Texas in the Southwestern U.S. offered some of the best views of this year's Geminid Meteor Shower. Upwards of 120 meteors per hour occured at shower peak although most city dwellers didn't see that many. Best viewing was outside the skyglow of city lights. Please bookmark this site and use it's resources to stay up with the progress of the 2010 Geminid Meteor shower. Clear skies !!

This is a composite image of meteors greater than magnitude -2 captured by the El Paso Allsky Camera since the night of Dec. 6-7, 2010. These are good Geminid candidates and was a great start to the annual shower which peaked the night of Dec. 13-14. More updates to come so bookmark this site and keep watching!

Geminid Meteors Live Count On IMO Website Is Underway !!...12/13/10...

    Geminids 2010
    The International Meteor Organization

The Geminids is one of the finest, and probably the most reliable, annual meteor shower. Activity exceeds 100 meteors per hour around December 14, with meteors radiating from a point near Castor in constellation Gemini. Geminids are slow, bright and occasionally colorful. Many observers consider the shower to be more spectacular than the famous Perseids in August, but the Geminids are less widely known because of the cold and often clouded December nights in the northern hemisphere.
This year the peak is expected in the morning of December 14 (roughly near 11h UT). Many tens of meteors per hour will be visible in the nights surrounding December 14, with highest rates occuring in the hours after local midnight when the radiant reaches its highest altitude in the sky and the moon has set. More information on the observing conditions can be found in the shower calendar.
The activity graph below is updated every 15 minutes based on visual observing reports submitted to the IMO - click on the graph for "LIVE COUNT".

    Meteor News-SpaceWeather.com Update...Dec. 12, 2010...GEMINID METEOR SHOWER

The Geminid meteor shower peaks this year on Dec. 13th and 14th.  Forecasters say meteor rates could exceed 100 per hour for observers under dark rural skies.  For best results, start your meteor watch on Monday night, Dec. 13th, around midnight.  Keep an eye out for Geminids until sunrise on Tuesday, Dec. 14th. There's no special trick to seeing the Geminids.  Bundle up for maximum warmth, go outside, lie down and look up. Geminids can appear in any part of the sky, but all their tails will point back to the radiant in the constellation Gemini.  Check http://spaceweather.com

"This is the meteor that flew across the sky on 8th December. I caught it on the camera in my car. I had just driven past Ken Dodd's house, and noticed it shooting across the sky". "Mystery" Fireball Over Atlanta GA ?...Is No Mystery !

I'll preface this story with a few facts relevant to this "sighting". 1...The sun is nearly at it's lowest point in the sky for the season. 2...This "event" occured close to sunset in Atlanta. 3...toward the end of the video, available by going to http://www.ajc.com/video?bcpid=97471435001&bclid=1717763711&bctid=700744798001 another aircraft can be seen entering the frame from right to left looking very much like the object in question. So...without delay and considering all the above factors, ELPALLSKY can say, without a doubt, this is a man-made aircraft. Please note the "firey" appearance and slow movement in the video and use it for future reference. Full story available at http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/mystery-object-streaks-across-768562.html

Large Oklahoma Meteor?...Just hours after Large Colorado Bolide Of 12/03/10.....

Reports are coming in to ELPALLSKY about another large, bright meteor...this time over Oklahoma and just 4 1/2 hours after another large and bright fireball wowed Colorado residents. The OK event was visible in AR and KS as well. Reports are as follows...

Dec 5 2010, 8:57 AM sandra2646 Reports: I saw a green light falling vertically around 11pm in Edmond, Oklahoma as I was driving home. I thought it was part of a flare or firework it was bright and it faded before it hit the ground. It definitely looked like it was in our atmosphere. My husband also saw the same light.

    Mtn. View, Arkansas 11:00 p.m CST 3DEC2010
Guest305 (guest): I live near Mtn. View, Arkansas late last night about 11:00 p.m. I was loading wood in furnace and looked in the western sky and saw a huge green fireball it fell down till it dissapered behind tree line it was by far the biggest shooting star i've ever seen.

Seminole, Oklahoma - green glow falling from sky Dec. 3, 2010.

Lyndon Davis E-mails: A friend and I were sitting on the porch of a hunting cabin, far away from any light sources.  I saw a very large greenish fireball fall sometime around 11:00pm (10:47pm if I recall correctly).  I was in Southeastern Kansas  (approximately 15 miles east of Coffeyville, KS) and the object was to the south, falling in a straight vertical line to the ground.  We did not hear any noise, but it was bright enough to cast shadows for approximately 3 seconds and cause my friend (who was looking in the opposite direction) to turn around and look due to the intensity of the light.
It had an appearance somewhat like a flare.  I did not see any trail or debris coming from it.  It was, by far, the largest thing I have ever seen fall from the sky.

Kaysi E-mails: My name is Kavysania Kinslow I am in Oklahoma City, OK. I witnessed this same thing last night at about 11:00 from across the street from the State Capitol Building, in Oklahoma City. Do you have any idea what this may have been. Would please keep me informed. Thank you for your post and time.

Meteor News...Large Bright Colorado Bolide Meteor

Guest490 (guest): On Friday Dec. 3rd, 2010 at about 6:30 pm I was driving just east of Denver International Airport. I thought I was witnessing a plane crashing at first, but there was no hint of red or orange color, it was bright white with a long tail and lasted for several seconds. It seemed to be close to the ground north and east of Barr Lake .

Simona in Colorado Springs E-mails:  Just a quick note as I saw this incredible meteor on Friday night (12/3) & the website I had told about it still hasn't posted the event.  It was approx. 6:30 pm local time, I was driving north on the eastern side of Colorado Springs & saw it in the eastern sky, extremely low.  I would have sworn it landed only 10 miles to the east of me.  It was the most amazing one I've ever seen just b/c it was so incredibly low & close.   What is even odder to me is that about 6-9 months ago I saw another incredible meteor, when I was driving & was at the exact same location as this one (Approx. Powers Blvd x Dublin), what are the odds of seeing a meteor entering the atmosphere a few months apart when you are driving (& the driver) both times at almost the exact same location.  The other meteor however was in the northwest sky & was much higher.   Appeared to be landing over the Air Force Academy.
    regards,
    Simona

I was driving east on Table Mesa Blvd in Boulder, CO on 12/3/10 at 6:30 PM and saw this large green meteor to the north of me, coming out of the east. It was truly the most incredible falling star I've ever seen. As the others posted, it was in view for several seconds. I even had a chance to tell my husband "check it out" and he saw the tail end.

Jeanne Judge E-mails: Last night at @ 6:30 p.m. I saw a striking and large ball of green light in the sky, Northeast in the sky from Golden, CO.  It was much larger and greener than any shooting star that I have seen in the past.  At first I thought that it was a fireball from an airplane it was that striking.  It fell to the North/North/West very quickly and dissipted while it was still well above the earth.

Guest206 (guest) Reports: Saw a very large green ball of light in the sky north east of Golden, CO @ 6:30 on December 3, 2010. At first I thought it was a fireball from an exploded plane it was that large- but it was green in color, moved very quickly, and dissipated quickly. It was quite beautiful and stunning. It fell to the NNW in the sky (still significanyly east of Golden and, it appeared, Denver)

Mitriza (guest) Reports: So glad we weren't the only ones to see it! We were driving north from Colorado Springs at about 6:30 pm on 12/3/2010 and saw a blue-green light to the NE falling quickly. It faded for a half second and then came right back. We were waiting for a boom or fireball but nothing happened. Very curious. Never seen anything like that before.
Stillwater, OK at 23:00 central time 3DEC2010
ELPALLSKY Guest185 Reports: Saw a green light falling from the sky from Stillwater OK at 11PM central time 12/3/10. I was driving east and saw it slightly to the south.

Other reports are coming in now from Colorado, Kansas and Texas about this event. If you observed this event, please e-mail me at wxtx01@gmail.com with time, date, location and a brief description including brightness, direction of travel, color, duration and whether there was any fragmentation or sounds such as sonic booms within 2 minutes of the event. Tucson Bolide Update...ELP Captures 11/28/10 Tucson Fireball

ELP Allsky Reports: After a thorough search of archived imagery, I'm happy to report that the El Paso Station/Sandia Allsky Camera did capture the Tucson AZ bolide which blazed across SE Arizona skies at 23:52:15 MST 11/28/10 (06:52:15 UTC 11/29/10). In the full composite w/compass, the meteor appears at roughly 255 degrees and flashes at roughly 259 degrees. This event is of particular interest to me as I was in Tucson at the time and witnessed it firsthand. I now estimate the magnitude of the meteor during flight at -13 with a terminal burst magnitude of possibly as high as -14. Again, I heard no sonics, i.e. electrophonics nor sonic booms. Below are composite flight images and a movie of the event as seen from the El Paso Allsky Camera. I'm hoping for additional images and videos from allsky cameras in Tucson shortly and will update this blog as/if they become available. SE Arizona residents who saw this meteor event are encouraged to email me at wxtx01@gmail.com and file a report with the AMS at http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball/report.html
