Ontario Canada Meteor Fireball 30JUL2011

From The ELPALLSKY Chatbox:
Jul 30 2011, 10:20 PM Ken Scheffler... Hamilton, Ontario.
Slow moving meteor or debris moving west to east and to my south. Only caught a bit of it between a tree and my neighbour's house. I've watched dozens of meteor showers and seen many hundreds of meteors. This was a little different although not a fireball. Occurred c. 11:50 pm EST on July 30, 2011.

Massachussetts Meteor Fireball Witnessed On 29JUL2011

Email From:
Dan M.-Worcester, MA:
Hi, Friday evening, 7/29/11, at 8:07 PM EDT, I was standing in my driveway looking up at some birds, when I saw a fireball pass overhead going extremely slowly (much slower than meteors I have seen in the past).  It was a mix of orange and yellow, one piece, did not appear to be breaking up although it was a bit jagged at the trailing edge, and was silent.  It took about 4 seconds to traverse my line of site from directly overhead until it disappeared over the horizon.  I live about 10 miles SSE of Worcester, MA., and it went over me heading almost due NNW.
Has anyone reported seeing anything like this, (or should I be seeing a doctor!)?
Dan     thank you Dan! No Psych needed :-) OTHER WITNESSES? Post reports here

Meteor Fireball West Central Oregon Reported To ELPALLSKY 31JUL2011

The Following Report Indicates A Low Elevation (possible earthgrazer) Fireball With Persistent Train/Trail ~11:00 P.M. PDT 31JUL2011

Email From:
Sue P.-Neakahnie Mt, OR:
Going north to south, the fireball seemed to be going level in the sky. The tail kept lighting up and it just hung  in the air in full suspension for about 9-12 seconds. Even when the tip was no longer in view, the tail didn’t change, it just hung there in the sky-much longer than when we watch fireworks linger in the 4th of July sky.
WE watched it with binoculars and it turned into a faint cloudy looking trail that began to fall out of the sky. This was visible for about 1 full minute.     thank you Sue! Waiting for additional reports.

I saw a large metor located in the Eastern sky falling to the North. It had a large trailing tail and white in color. It seemed to last for a good 8 to 10 seconds before it burned out.     many thanks John & Deirdre!

Kim B.-Galion, OH...26JUL2011 9:44pm EDT:
While searching the west sky for comet Elenin, in leo...at around 9:45pm, a very bright fireball lite up the sky, entering in through the big dipper, streaking passed Regulus, falling at the SW horizon. We have seen several very bright ones over the past week. Glad I found the web site while looking for information on it. Kim *~     glad you took time to report Kim. Thank you!

Linda S.- Gilmer, TX...24JUL2011 9:20pm CDT:
I was in the parking lot of our local Wal-mart and saw a big, bright, object falling from the sky. I've seen falling stars before, but this appeared to be VERY close, because it was so big. It fell straight down, in a brilliant white light that appeared to burn out before it hit the ground. Just thought I would share this with you.      thank you Linda!

Brian S.-Northern Indiana:

Corky C., Sabine E., and Lisa S.-Truckee, CA
On Saturday July 23, 2011, 3 of us were sitting outside on our deck looking up at the Milky Way and all the other objects in the night sky. Sometime around 11:30 pm we all saw a very bright meteorite (fireball if you will), traveling from what appeared to be northwest horizon to the southeast horizon, in the northern sky (coming from near the Big Dipper). Our location is Truckee, California, elevation 5,912 feet, and the weather conditions that night were extremely clear, with no wind, smoke or anything else to affect the clear sky. The object made a very bright white trail behind it, and didn't explode like other fireballs (maybe space junk, huh?) that we've seen. It was very spectacular! We hope this helps in your research.  Corky, Sabine, and Lisa, excellent report! Our thanks.

***If you observed any of the above events...we want to know (and those who reported would probably like confirmation as well!). So please email us at wxtx01@gmail.com with a description of what you saw and we'll post your report here too! Thank you!***

For The 4th Consecutive Night!!..Significant Fragmenting Meteor Fireball Event North Texas 25JUL2011...Also Seen From Oklahoma

...UPDATE 29JUL2011...Finnish Meteor Physicist Calculates Orbit, Trajectory, and Potential Impact Site For Event Below...
By: ELPALLSKY...Finland based Astronomer and meteor physics expert Esko Lyytinen has plotted a single camera capture solution of the widely seen North Texas fireball of 25JUL2011 at the request of ELPALLSKY. Lyytinen warns that the data is SUBJECTIVE in that it is based upon an assumed beginning height, and that upper level winds were not factored into dark flight calculations (continuation of flight after illumination ends). THE GRAPHICS BELOW DEPICT A ROUGH ESTIMATE!

Esko Lyytinen:
"This arrived from direction 134 or 135 with the slope of 28 degrees.
IF assumed to have the beginning height to be 80 km, then the entry velocity would be 17.7 km/s. The corresponding end height is at 28 km. The end velocity is about 4 km/s. This (with the deceleration derived) would correspond the end mass of about 0.5 to 1 kg. But this is highly sensitive to what the real "height scale" is. I have not tried to calculate the dark flight wind effects, but without this, the rough landing area with the above solution is 33.92 N, 99.36 W. The flight was at a distance of roughly 140 kilometers (or a little more) from the Hawley camera."

This Latest Event Occurred At ~9:20 P.M. CDT 25JUL2011 Reported To ELPALLSKY In The Following E-Mails...

Ken R.-Highland Village, TX:
I just witnessed a really bright - and apparently VERY CLOSE – fireball in the North Texas sky at approx 9:20pm. I was facing west northwest when I saw it; it appeared to hit the ground just a few blocks from me (yes, it WAS that close). The fireball/meteorite(?) was a very bright orange’ish-red, with a yellowish-orange trail; fragments of it were breaking off while it fell to the ground. I’ve not seen anything like this before, so I began searching the web immediately to see if anyone else had seen the same fireball in my area (Highland Village, TX ~ just north of FM407 on the Highland Village/Flower Mound border, just west of Sellmeyer Blvd). Very cool!!

Geri H.-South Fort Worth TX:
Large fireball NW sky seen from backyard looking above the house about 9:30 pm. Fell at a 10 degree angle from left to right.  Glowing white with a red tail.

Patti M.-Dallas, TX:
I was sitting outside by the pool talking on my cell phone. At about 9:15 pm CST I saw a fireball arc through the sky, fall rapidly and burnout.

Margo D.-Midwest City, OK:
I was on my computer late tonight searching to see if I could find anyone who saw a large green perfectly round object falling from the sky as I was looking southwesterly and I came upon your website. I live in Midwest City, OK. I could see glowing near the left/top side of it. It disappeared behind some trees near my home. At first, I thought it was a falling star but it was much too large and it was glowing green. I expected to hear a loud boom and to see the sky light up when it hit the Earth but there was nothing. I watched the news tonight at 10PM hoping to hear something but there was nothing reported. I have never seen anything like this in my life and I am 65 years old. I was sitting outback in our swing, talking on the phone when I saw this object. I am hoping someone somewhere saw this or something similar.

Margie S.-Spring, TX:
We were south of Spring, Texas on I-45 North at dusk when we saw this meteor. It was visible for 3-4 seconds, long enough for us to discuss it, then disappeared - presumably burnt out. The direction seemed to be heading due north. I imagine it confused a lot of people who may have thought it was an aircraft, even though it  was travelling quite fast. Pretty cool. Third one I’ve seen – the other two were on I-10 at night years ago.

LK.-Near Kerville, TX:
On Monday July 25, 2011 at dusk, while seated on my front porch facing north, I saw a brilliant light speed from a point about 45 degrees above the horizon in the north and drop to the northwest at about a 30 degree (or greater) angle to the horizon. It moved fast and didn't seem to decrease in intensity as it dropped to the horizon. It was about 1/4 in diameter relative to its length, bright blue with a yellow edge all around it. I have never before seen anything as unusual. I looked at a clock about 9:20 pm, CDT, and estimate I saw it about 9:16 pm. It was a night where the stars could be seen with no moon light.
I saw it from Kerr County, Texas about 7 miles west of downtown Kerrville and 1 mile south of Interstate 10.

Priscilla M.-Dallas, TX:
I was driving down 635 West, around 9:30 or 10pm. I was driving past the intersection of 75 and 635 when I saw a bright green fireball fall from the sky at a very steep angle!!
I was driving so couldn't see where it landed but I was curious to find out what it could be! Any information on what it could've been would be great! Thanks,
Sorry, I was excited and forgot to state location fireball was headed!!
I was in Dallas, on 635 West and the fireball was headed North from where I was!
It darted across, right in front of me!
Thanks,
Priscilla

Corinne H.-Klamath Falls, OR...First Report to ELPALLSKY:
I just witnessed the "meteor" tonight driving with my boyfriend who also saw it. going North on Hwy 39 in Klamath Falls Oregon. This was the Biggest meteor i have ever seen! the size was comparable with the moon and it left a very long green streak behind it. The time was about 3:20 am... It went from the left down to the right and looked like it was disapating near the end but then i could not see it any longer. this was seriously scary, so any sort of answers would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.   looking into it Corinne. Thank you for posting! Did you observe an overall color?  Green, very very green!  thank you Corinne!

Jody H.-Albany, OR:
I was over trapping cats in Corvallis, OR, behind a nursing home, for spay neuter, which is what I do.  I was looking for something on my passenger side seat and heard a raccoon out by my trap, chirping to her babies, so I looked back over, and out my window.  Just at that moment, the sky lit up.  HUGE fireball, streaming fire in at least three places, lit up the sky, to the south and east of my location.  Saw it about 30 degrees from my line of sight between the ground and the object.  There had been a lot silent lightning (too far off to hear thunder), but this was something else and at first I thought it was a plane going down or a UFO or something.  I figure it must have been a meteor.  I heard nothing. Color was black with lots of orange fire.

Tyler L.-Portland, OR:
I was sitting in my room looking out my window which faces southeast and at approximately 3:15/3:16 a.m. I saw a very large greenish yellow object moving horizontally from west to east rapidly. I only caught a slight glimpse of it, as my window isn't very wide. I would say that it's perceived distance would be that of a relatively low flying large airplane. Size wise, i can't really say how it stacks up compared to the moon. It wasn't alarmingly large, but the colors and closeness did startle me quite a bit.
Looking forward to a possible explanation!

Walker-Bremerton, OR:
Witnessed this morning around 318am while driving south on hwy 303 here in bremerton washington. We had low level cloud cover overnight and this fireball was in front of the cloud cover. Large, as in same size as the moon in appearance, big green debris tail. One of the most impressive I've seen...
Kind of creepy close.

Aimee S.-Woodland, WA:
I was in woodland, wa around 3:20ish am and seen a flaiming ball of green with a trail of sparks behind it.. going from west to east, what is it? My Boyfriend had also seen it in amboy,wa a short time after I did.

Terre M.-Portland, OR:
Sitting on my porch in Portland,Or around midnight on Jul.24.2011, facing WSW, I saw a streak in the sky starting at about 11o'clock arcing towards 4o'clock.  At about the 12o'clock line it formed a ball and a split second later blew to pieces.  I could see the fragmentation.  Size comparison, standing 10ft from a wall, the streak was the size of a piece of flat dental floss and the ball the size of a lg pea. The fragmentation looked like a sparkler.  Total time lapse was about 1 1/2 seconds.  My guess the fallout landed well into the Pacific Ocean.

Jenny R.-Bellingham, WA:
My husband and I were driving to the Bellingham airport (Whatcom County, WA) this morning and at 3:18 a.m. we saw a huge white fireball/star SLOWLY move across the sky before trees blocked it from our view. We were heading directly south and it was moving west to east, looking like it was going to head into the ground. We could not figure out what it was as it was too big and moved too slow to be a "shooting star." I googled this morning and was glad to come across your site and see that we were not the only ones that saw it!

Matt W. & Shiloh D.-Klamath Falls, OR:
So last night at about 3:15 -.3:20 Me and 2 other friends were hanging out on our rooftop where we like to drink and watch the sky for satellites or shooting stars on our days off, when observed the meteor from start to finish. At first sight it looked like a shooting star or satellite, leaving no trail behind it until it came into the atmosphere. We heard the very vague sonic boom as it went past, at this point sounding like a F-16 going through the sky. After it appeared to hit the atmosphere it began to leave a trail and became very bright looking like a fireball going through the sky. the sound continuted probably 5-10 seconds after it dissapeared. My guess was it traveled a good five to sixhundred miles across the sky.  It appeared to have started from south-western skys of Oregon and looked to be heading north-east toward Washington or Canada.  Yes it did look very big and powerful, but I think people are over exaggerating by saying it looked like the size of the moon, don't get me wrong it was very big and amazing. If anyone has questions or and other info on it in regards to it hiting the earth please email me.  mworrell17@gmail.com

Kelsey C.-Sherwood, OR:
I saw something like a meteor early this morning, July 25. I wasn't
conscientious enough to look at the time, but it would have been
between 3:00am and 4:00am. I'm guessing closer to 3:00. I live in
Sherwood, Oregon and saw pass through a southward facing window. It
traveled right to left (west to east) at a slightly downward angle. I
estimate it took 2 seconds to traverse the 4 foot window. The
brightest part of it was a little smaller than the size of my little
finger nail at arm's length. The glow from it was very blue, and lit
up the sky at least as well as a full moon would (or it seemed to from
my limited view). It wasn't very high over the horizon. If I went back
and measured the window's height and were I was sitting, I could
probably come up with a pretty good estimate on its angle. I'd be
interested to know anymore information on it!

Brian J.-Portland, OR:
I saw the fireball last night!
Bright ball with greenish tail.
I was facing south on NE 24th and Broadway, meteor was  moving west to east.
Any info? I notified KGW news, but was the first to call in.

Caelan D.-Tualatin, OR:
I was stargazing with my girlfriend in a field next to an elementary school, in the King City/Tigard area, when sometimes after 3 AM but before 3:30, there was a bright flash across the sky to the south. My girlfriend noticed it first, and told me to look. It was the largest falling star I've ever seen. It lit the sky up with a bluish light, and the meteor itself had a greenish trail, and chunks were slowly coming off of it, as it sailed across the sky from west to east. It was in the sky for at least 5-7 seconds. It looked like a firework. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Bryan S.-Yreka, Northern CA:
I was driving north on the 5 in California by Yreka and saw the bright light at about 3:20am July 25. It looked like a pod streaking across the sky. It was slower then a normal shooting star. The colors looked like a firework. It was bright white with green and a few other colors. It lasted about maybe 7 seconds. I saw it go over the mountains from left to right. I have never seen anything like that

Zac P.-Vancouver, WA:
At about 3:18 I saw a fireball streak across the sky south of my location in Vancouver, Washington, traveling from west to east.  The tail was visible across the entire sky view from my bedroom.  At the head it was was extremely bright, maybe greenish-yellow and appeared to have some larger pieces falling off of it 2-3 times.  I didn't hear anything that I associated with the fireball, but we had been experiencing thunder and lightening on and off all night, which actually culminated in a storm cell that moved in about 4:30.

Sandi B.-Sisters, OR:
I was sleeping outside near Sisters, Oregon, when I was awakened by a very bright light.  I saw a fireball shooting across the northern sky, from west to east.  The ball was huge and bright white.  The tail was across at least half the sky and throwing sparks.  It looked like a fireworks rocket shooting sideways.  This was at a little after 3:00 a.m.  Shortly after, there was a big boom or rumble I thought perhaps was thunder (though there was no lightening).

Holly D.-Tualatin, OR:
Hi, Don't know if this is related to the 3:20 a.m. event but didn't think it would hurt to report what me and my friend saw from our balcony late last night - early this morning in Tualatin, Oregon.  We were sitting on our third story balcony, facing SW and enjoying the cool, clear night.... we noticed so much activity!  At first we thought there were tons of satellites but then they started acting really strange... not moving at all like satellites and we wondered if we were witnessing UFOs?  My friend had a laser light and decided to point it at one since it was obviously not an airplane.  When she did this, what looked like shooting stars came out of the north sky toward where she pointed the light!  And then what looked like a comet with a blue front and green tail shot across the sky from the NE to SW as well and disappeared!  We witnessed four or five bright flashes in the east sky between midnight and one a.m. too.  I was just searching the net to see if any one else saw and reported what we experienced and that's how I found you. Hope this helps!

C. and N.-Santa Cruz, CA:
My boyfriend and I were walking on the beach in Santa Cruz, CA when we saw a giant fireball in the sky.  It was huge and flaming bright orange and red.  The time was about 11pm.  At first I thought it was a burning airliner, but realized it was just too huge to be a plane, moving much too quickly, and again flaming.  My boyfriend was really freaked out that it was some kind of UFO.  It shot across the whole span of the sky in about a minute.  Then it got much smaller and smaller, it came to a stop, and disappeared into the shape of a normal star.  As it disappeared we could see trails of it left behind.  It was the most unbelievable thing we have ever seen in our lives. I saw other posts on your blog from folks in Oregon and LA and elsewhere that saw fireballs later in the evening.  Anyone else report seeing what we did?
Thanks! C and N

Tyler P.-On The Road In WA:
My uncle and I were driving south on 167 in Washington and at first thought it was an airplane until it started flying real fast and fire was falling off of it lasted awhile saw the whole thing it was amazing

Bob H.-Camping In The Three Sisters Wilderness, Oregon:
Two friends and I were camping near Middle and North Sister over the weekend. We were attempting to climb North Sister and were heading west up a snowfield with brilliant stars above. We turned off our head lamps to take in the occasional shooting stars. At around 3:15 am, we all saw a fireball move somewhat slowly through the sky directly in front of us, heading from south to north. Blue and orange flames seemed to radiate around it, then calmed down briefly, then seemed to get more active. About a minute later, we heard a distant rumble that we though might be thunder but now think it might have been a sonic boom created by this meteor. None of us had seen anything like it before and were stunned. It seemed so surreal to see this object on fire passing before our eyes. We've been talking about it all day. Glad that others also saw the same thing. At least we weren't hallucinating.

Cindy H.-Redding, CA:
This morning at about 3:16 a.m. while driving north on Highway 5 near Redding CA, I witnessed a meteor traveling west to east at about 30 degrees.  It appeared to be about ¼ to ½ the size of a full moon, bright green, and traveling at a speed which allowed us to view it for at least 3 seconds before it was obscured by a hill.  Any idea where it landed? Nevada? Idaho? Wyoming?  Very exciting to see.   Cindy in Oregon

Los Angeles, Green CA Meteor Fireball 24JUL2011 Reported To ELPALLSKY

Eyewitnesses Report Fireball Over SO CAL As Bright Enough For Many To Have Seen...~01:00 a.m. PDT 24JUL2011...May Have Also Been Seen In Montebello, CA...

Email From:
Stanley B.-L.A. Metro Area, CA
Early Sunday morning on July 24 2011 at around 1am, my wife and I noticed what appeared to be a fireball in the sky. We were heading west on the 210 freeway and the weather was clear. The object in my perspective was lower than an airplane. The object was moving eastward at a consistent speed. I'm pretty sure others saw the object because of the traffic due to road construction. I would really like to know what my wife and I saw... This isn't the first time I've seen something going on in our skies.
Location and time of event: 210 westbound around the city of La Vern California at around 1am. The color was orange like an ember from a fire. It wasn't as bright as a full moon. We would say it was as bright as an airplane light when it is approaching it's landing and the size of it was about the of a UPS truck. There was no fragmentation. Also it wasn't moving that fast. It also seemed to be lower than what an helicopter would be flying. Please keep us informed and thank you for responding back to us!
Please contact me if you have any questions or answers. Thank you.   Thank you Stanley & Mrs. B.! Hope others will report as well.

Anonymous-Near L.A.:
I was driving east on i4 near plant city and at exactly 1:11 a.m. I saw the curious green shooting star. It looked as if it were headed straight for the ground. Kind of strange seeing as how N.A.S.A. JUST shut down. I've never seeing a "shooting star" like that one. It was tilted to the left. Definitely a streak behind it. No noise. Just a very very vibrant green below it. It was almost as if it happened in slow motion. If any info comes up, I'm extremely interested. Thanks!!     thanks for the confirmation! Other reports??? Is it possible this was seen by traffic cams? Let us know!

We were in the car, headed north in Boscewan, NH on Route 4 -- fireball was size of "sun" or slightly larger -- saw it about 45% north of horizon just above tree line -- short yellow tail - huge green "ball" that fizzeled out before reading horizon/trees!  Beautiful!!!

Fragmenting Meteor Fireball Over SE TX ~1:40am CDT 24JUL2011

Another In A Series Of Texas Fireballs Reported To ELPALLSKY...This One At 01:40 a.m. CDT 24JUL2011 Seen From Near Houston, TX

Email From:
Brad G.-Pearland, TX:
Sunday  7/24/2011  ,  0144am CST. Might have been closer to 0140am, as my wristwatch runs a bit fast.
Location. Pearland , tx.  77584
Sitting in a garage playing poker, looking out the garage door over the top of my 1story house across the street , I witnessed a fireball that looked like a very fast moving aircraft.  I am very familiar with the speeds of the medic helicopters in my area, and that is the fastest thing in the air at that time of day(exception of 727's on nortbound approach to major airport)  It was most likely moving west to east, or to the southeast.  Just above the 1story rooftop would have made the viewing angle about 20-25 degrees above horizon.
Object was descending, but only slightly, and did certainly emit 3-4 glowing remnants. This fact solidified the meteor status in my mind.  It looked a lot like the famous "high school football game footage" I have viewed on the Internet.
Standoff distance impossible to estimate, as sky was unusually clear for this time of year.  Cumuli clouds coming off the gulf would make this sighting an impossibility 99% of the July mornings. I will be happy to measure angles amd better estimate angular velocity if it is useful,. It's my first fireball with ejected remnants , so I feel especially happy about viewing it. I wish I wasn't in a light pollution area, as it could have been spectacular.     thank you Brad! Excellent report!!

I'm in Clear Lake Tx so not sure it was the same thing. It was between 8:45 and 9 pm. It was very bright and green. It this the time it was seen?     yes Jessamyn...this was the time frame. Thank you!

Eva & Stan O.-Spring, TX:
We witnessed a green fireball last night (July22, 2011) at about 8:46 pm CDT.
We were travelling on I45 northbound through Spring, Texas. The fireball ran parallel to us so was moving south to north. Its trajectory was to our left (west). It was very large an intense and disappeared at about 20 degrees above the northern horizon and at about 345 degrees on a compass. It seemed green to me initially but then I was looking at it through my windshield which is tinted across the top. Whether it was actually green I can’t be sure because it disappeared very soon after. The duration of what we saw was probably close to 1 second which for such an event seemed like a long time.
I was driving so didn’t see it until it came into view through the windshield so I can’t say how far behind me that it became visible to anyone else.     thank you Eva and Stan!

Shanta L.-Katy, TX:
I saw a orange light fall from sky over Katy Texas around 9:00 pm yesterday July 22, 2011. It can straight down from the sky then just disappeared.     thanks Shanta!

Tanner O.-Houston, TX:
I'm so glad I found this website, because I was so confused as to what I saw.
I was driving on the highway, coming back from class, when I saw what I can only describe as a fireball, shooting across the sky. It was going straight, and it was going incredibly fast, and it was only visible for two to three seconds and then it disappeared. It didn't disappear into the horizon or anything, it just simply vanished. It was a combination of green, and yellow shades. I was on interstate 610 going north, and the fireball was  shooting north as well.
The date was July 22nd, 2011, and I apologize my time will not be specific but it was anywhere from 8:45 to 9:10. I never thought about it but it was actually quite large. I believe it was about the size of a full moon, if not larger, and considerably brighter than a full moon. I could not hear anything due to the radio being on, but it was moving so fast that there was a streak behind it of the same green and yellow colors. I hope this helps at least a little.
I have included an attachment of where I was driving(obvious red line) when I saw this, and where the object was moving(yellow).     Thanks for taking time to do a visual aide Tanner!

Susan B.-On The Road In Texas:
Saw large bright white object falling straight down, toward the northeast last night, July 22, 2011, about 8:45 pm. I was driving near us hwy 183 Spicewood Springs rd.     thank you Susan!

Teresa-Unknown Location:
I was facing southeast and saw this. It fell straight down. From where I was it was really bright white with a bluish tint. I'm not really sure of the time, the sun hadn't quite set all the way, shortly before 9pm. It was a pretty good size. I'm surprised I can't find more information in it.

Fragmenting Bright White California Meteor Fireball ~9:40pm 17JUL2011

E-mail From:
Cynthia N.-Laguna Niguel CA (near Laguna   Beach CA):
I witnessed a HUGE white fire ball from the south sky toward north @ a down ward angle. At first I thought it was a large airline plane afire, however, our near by John Wayne Airport here in Orange County CA has their flight pattern from the west sky toward the east. This HUGE ball of white fire was angled @ an approx 20 degree downward angle. Before it "went out" I saw a large particle fall behind it then the entire HUGE fire ball went out.It looked approx a 20th size of a full moon. What was this?     likely a fragmenting meteor called a "bolide". Thanks for your report!

gerry kirkpatrick said...
I live out in the back country of San Diego. Its near Ramona called San Diego Country Estates. I was looking out the window, westward and saw the same white ball falling from the sky. My first thought was this is the largest falling star I have ever seen. I was thinking of my girlfriend that died last August at the exact time it fell from the sky. I took the shooting star as a confirmation that all is well with Jullya!  https://sites.google.com/site/jullyaindeed/

Frederick-Montreal, Quebec Canada:
Fred

James B.-On The Road In NJ:
I was driving north on the NJ turnpike 3 miles south of I-195, and I just happened to look left and saw a very bright light streak across the sky also heading in a northern direction. Halfway through it's visible flight of about 1.5 seconds it flashed very brightly, then it was gone. I wasn't able to hear any sounds being that i was in a big rig with the windows up, and i only wish i could have gotten a photo or video of it, but alas, none. I did some searching and some said they saw one at about 4:00 am but i'm almost certain that when i looked at my phone it said 3:05 am. I've never seen one before so big and bright, compared to a full moon being that the moon has been pretty big the past couple days, i would estimate you could fit 50 in the size of my view of the moon. I'm sending it to you this way since i can't use outlook.

Maureen A.- Morrisville, NY:
I was walking the dogs at shortly after 4 AM on July 17, 2011. There was a flash (like lightning) that lit up the sky and I looked and saw what looked like a fireworks- little pieces scattering and then one big piece flying through the air. Just before looking up I heard a "sizzle" sort of sound for a second. It wasn't as big as a full moon, but it was bigger than the biggest stars. Coolest thing I have ever seen. My husband thinks I'm making it up. Location is Morrisville, NY. I was facing east and the fireball was above and to my right and traveled from west to east. (Could've been a bit north-east)  Like I said, it lit the outdoors just like lightning so I looked up and heard the sizzle and saw a bunch of pieces (like a fireworks) and then the one big piece flew for maybe a second (seemed longer, but probably wasn't) and it was just very very bright, like whitish in color. (I didn't see any green, even when it was in a bunch of pieces it just looked whitish). Hope this helps! Again, it was SO cool to see!

Jim and Dianne T.-St. Rt. 90:
approx @ 4:10 this morning driving south east on state rt. 90 towards Homer, NY I saw a large green flash in the sky it went across towards the north. a few seconds later in the sky towards the south i saw what looked like lightning. The green was very bright. It really scared me at first then i realized it must have been some type of meteor or fire ball. It was very cool to see. I called home at 7am to ask my husband if he had stayed awake
after i had left the house and if he had seen it. He did not see it

Sarah J.-Aurora-Cayuga Lake NY:
I SAW IT!!!  It was the coolest thing I have ever seen.  I was camping in my back yard in my pop-up trailor.  I was just falling asleep and happened to open my eyes and saw a VERY BIG, VERY BRIGHT white light. Then I noticed it was Green around the outside.  It wasn't moving fast like the little ones do during a meteor shower this was much slower but it didn't take very long to go by.  I started hitting my husband and before he could wake up and look over it was gone.  It fell like that for a few seconds and then went away and came back in a big bright orange fire color and flamed out.  It was spectacular and kind of Armageddon-like.  There is a planet up there that I had been looking at all night and it was MUCH bigger than that!  If the planet was a pea then this was volleyball to basketball sized.   I looked at my watch after I finally realized what had just happened and it was 4:15 a.m., I figure 5 minutes had gone by since the start.  I was so hoping for another!  Aurora, NY (not Buffalo/Rochester East Aurora the other Aurora on Cayuga Lake)
more from Sarah...Sorry I am so excited that I didn't read everything that you asked for... I was laying on my back facing South and could see it clearly in approximately the 11:00 position. It was not directly overhead, I had to move my eyes down to see it but I didn't have to move my head. It was moving in a south or (Southwest) to northeast pattern.  It just appeared so it is hard to say that it was definitely came from a specific direction.  I didn't hear anything, like I said before, I was just about to fall asleep and my eyes opened.  I might of heard something and that is why my eyes opened or maybe the brightness.  It was much brighter than the moon and MUCH bigger than the moon at that time.  The moon was hidden by the roof of the camper and I think it was lower than where the meteor started.  There was some fragmentation when it came back the second time.  I saw some orange much smaller pieces.  When it came back it was much smaller like a tennis ball.  I could only see the planet so that is what I have to compare it to.  I am very excited and I can't believe I actually saw it!

Nathan D.-Location on Graphic Below:
Just to send in another report of seeing the large green burning object. Seemed to have a substantial mass to it and disappeared over the horizon
Traveling south to north. Here is a  rough estimate of the spot I was facing when seeing the meteor. It was quite amazing and look forward to hearing more reports or if it struck the earth or anything! Hope this is helpful at all! Have a great day!

Lynn L.-Cos Cob, CT USA:
I SAW IT!! I live in Cos Cob (Greenwich) CT and at approximately 1:47 am July 17, 2011, I noticed something odd in the sky outside my bedroom window. I got to to observe a red/orange/yellow ball, travelling slowy, in a straight line, across the sky in the distance. It was parallel to the ground and moving right to left (west to east). It didn't seem to be going away from me, or coming in my direction either. It just moved slowly in a straight line. After about 40 seconds, the "light" went out and it was gone.
I thought a UFO, or possible a plane with one engine on fire, as it was definitely NOT descending or ascending. I'm happy to hear it wasn't a plane!
additional email from Lynn...PLEASE NOTE that the time that I saw "something" that appeared to be a fireball, it was approx 1:47 am today, NOT 4 am as others are saying. AND it was not GREEN, but reddish-orange-yellow in color. Not ascending or descending either. Moving right to left (west to east). It was very bright, and I believe that the color and brightness is what likely caught my eye, as I way lying in bed, watching tv on a big 52" screen, that is about feet away from that particular window, and the tv in on the adjacent wall to the window wall. There is no reason for me to have been looking out the window, but the glow far up in the sky must have caught my peripheral vision to make my eyes move from the tv to the left, where that window is. That window looks out to the east, and I was looking up and to my right; the glowing ball was moving right to left (west to east). From the time I noticed it, to the time it suddenly stopped glowing, was about 40 seconds. Please email me if you need more details. I did call a friend at 2 am to discuss it, and we both said what a shame I didn't have my video camera at my beside, or my still camera.

Eric M.-Quebec, Canada:
I was driving in Gatineau (Québec), towards Ottawa (Ontario) and saw that huge fireball in the sky. It went from red/orange/yellow with a white center and then changed to a blue/greenish color. It was a bit bigger than the moon. I never saw something like that in my whole life and was waiting for a big ''boom'', but nothing. I guess it just disintegrated in the atmosphere. It was 4:05 am on July 17th 2011.

Paul K.-Queens, NY:
Sitting on top of my roof in Astoria queens and three of us witnessed the brightest/largest shooting star ever! It ended up green going north and broke into two pieces, the whole thing lasted long enough for me to stand up and yell about how crazy that this was!!!

Laura L.-Penn Yan, NY:
My name is Laura, I was in Penn Yan, NY on a back porch facing east. Just after 4:00AM on July 17th 2011 I saw through the trees a very bright bluish light. I have seen shooting stars and it didn't look like anything I had ever seen before. It was brighter than the moon, larger than a star, but smaller than the full moon. It was brighter at the front and had like a tail of light following it. It was going at a downward angle going slightly to the left, i think traveling north east. A second or two after it went out of my sight from the trees I did see the sky light up from that direction almost like a flash of lightning from a distance. I didn't hear any sounds during or after it happened. Was a very beautiful sight and I hope that this can help in any research you are doing.

Eric N.-Oceanside, NY:
On 7/17/11 at about 4:05 AM EST, I was driving Northbound in Oceanside, NY when I observed a meteor in the sky to my left, approximately West-Northwest of my location.  I initially thought it was fireworks; it started out orange-white, but turned to a green-white as it increased in intensity.  I first observed it to the West, and it appeared to travel in a Northerly direction at a downward angle.  It streaked, flared bright green-white, and appeared to fragment as it dissipated, but it was difficult to see at that point due to houses and trees.  As I was in a moving vehicle, I did not see the origination of the meteor nor did I hear any sounds.  It was quite bright.

Neal S.-Rochester, NY:
I was sitting on my porch around 4AM smoking a cigarette and looked up and saw a BRIGHT green object fall from the sky until it went below the roofs of the houses across the street. then there was a flash. This was seen from Rochester NY. It was brighter than any other shooting star i ever have seen in 32 years of being alive.

Xavier O.-Stamford, CT:
Hi, I don't know if this helps but today around 3:30am, I was in my
room but outside I saw what looked like a green fireball/meteor. I
live in Stamford, Connecticut 109 Tresser Blvd. and saw it 315*
NorthWest. I wan't to know about this too.

Chester J.-Rochester, NY:
I was Eastbound on I490 east of Rochester,NY approx 4:05 AM Sunday 7/17. Saw a white/orange glowing streak low in the sky (northbound). It then exploded into a orange fireball & disappeared. CAJ

Karen C.-Queensbury, NY:
Wow! So glad to see and hear off others that witnessed this. Here’s how this event unfolded for me and my husband.
My husband and I both work nights in the production department at The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y. We had both recently arrived to our home in Queensbury, N.Y. and sat down on our back porch to admire the (near) full moon and beautifully calm, crisp and clear night. As we were talking with one another and staring in a slightly south-westward direction into the sky, suddenly a flash appeared that looked like heat lightning, but there wasn’t a cloud in sight and absolutely no sound. Then a large bright light that resembled a golf ball quickly appeared, and then faded away into the blackish-blue background of the sky. This all happened in a moment’s time and we were both in shock at what we saw. I said, “What time is it? We need to document this moment.” Bill looked at the clock and it read 4:10 a.m., July 17, 2011. We were both a bit nervous at first. I even suggested in jest, “This might be the end of the world. Maybe were going to explode from a meteor crash. We better hug and kiss each other, NOW!” And we did… and here we still are today. That’s our story and we are sticking to it! We feel so lucky to have witnessed it

Pam In CT:
I live in Hamden, CT. Got up at 4:10 am on Sunday, July 17, 2011, and looked out the window, facing northwest and saw green streak in the sky. The very end was bright red. Very cool to see. It happened so quickly, I wondered what it was.

Jeffrey J.In NJ:
I live in Elizabeth NJ with north facing windows. At 4:05 AM I saw a bright green streak in the sky descending at a steep angle (45 degrees?) It SEEMED rather close but I heard nothing. It seemed to disappear before hitting the ground, but since I'm unsure of the distance it might've been behind the mountains or horizon.

Kevin C.In PA:
My name is Kevin. I witnessed the fireball from beginning as a bright white light streaking downward to the final explosion in what looked like a mortar of fireworks. I was in Factoryville, Pa. facing north to northeast just after 4:00am. The fireball was much larger than most meteorites I have seen. From my perspective, the object first appeared around 70 degrees high. It streaked downward in the sky and away from me, finally exploding around 35 to 40 degrees high. I don't recall seeing any other colors in the streak nor the explosion and I did not hear any sound. Again, from perspective, the fireball looked to be heading toward Upstate N.Y. or Canada. I have never seen a meteorite explode like this one did. The initial streak was very bright, lighting up the sky. Then it seemed to dim briefly and then the explosion, which also lit the sky and ground. I was able to see the object fragment and each piece glowed for a split second before burning up. In my opinion, the object seemed to have completely burned up after exploding and I did not see any fragments below 30 degrees or so.

I witnesses something lastnight in Long Island , Ny around 10:45pm. Originally I thought it was a shooting star.. But it was so slow moving.. Too slow.. Then I thought it was a plane on fire.. I have no idea what I saw last night all I do know is that it was very low to the ground, bright orange orb like and very big in size. Then it flew up, heading east and zoomed away.. It wasnt a baloon, helicopter, it was weird!

Bright green fireball/comet/not sure what it was. I was headed north on NJ Turnpike between exit 6 and 7 roughly 4 am the object appeared out of the sky to the west the light caught my attention from the corner of my eye, when I turned to fully look at it the object which was about as luminous as a clear full moon but green in color and was falling very fast in what direction appeared to be towards the earth. once the object fell out of eye sight I am almost certain I saw a green phase-like halo which may have come from the object making contact, if not the object was close enough to the planet to cast light on objects within eyesight

Large UK Meteor Fireball Reported To ELPALLSKY 15JUL2011

ELPALLSKY Reader Files Report Of A Large Fireball Witnessed Over England 02:48 UTC (GMT) 15JUL2011

E-mail From:
D. Thomas-Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England:
I was looking East, and the meteor was travelling from North to South on a level trajectory.  I watched it for approx. 5 seconds.  It didn't burn out and didn't look any diffferent when it was obscured from my view by buildings than it had when I first saw it.
Other info:  It appeared large-ish, but that could be deceptive and I couldn't tell if it was large and more distant than it appeared, or smaller and closer.   I didn't notice any colour (appeared white), but it had a short tail with some fire or sparks, and was low in the sky. The best I can do is tell you I am 5ft 3 inches tall, and looking over the top of a fence panel which is approx. 5ft 6 inches tall.  I was approx. 4 ft from the panel.  I guess that would put the height of the meteor at somewhere between 40 and 50 degrees?
I hope this is of some use to you although, from my not even amateur-ish description, I doubt it.  I would love to know if anyone else saw it though.
Kind regards.
D. Thomas     thank you D.!  Excellent report!  Anyone else in the UK see this fireball?
