The fireball fell from the sky -- streaking the colors of the rainbow and trailing smoke -- at 3:24 a.m., while most of Nebraska was sleeping.
Except for Greg, a ServiceMaster employee, who saw it from Lincoln Airport's parking garage. And Aaron, a TSA employee, who saw it from the interstate. And two citizens concerned enough to call 911.
And a sheriff's deputy, who was dispatched to search for a bright spot on the dark ground near Pawnee Lake, northwest of Lincoln.
And the surveillance camera (which never sleeps) mounted in the car rental return lot north of the airport terminal.
It recorded a black sky most of the night. But at about 42 seconds past 3:24,   MORE HERE

These images, which were pulled from video taken at the Lincoln Airport, show the object moving across the sky. (Courtesy images)

The following are three frames taken from video just prior to, during, and just after event time. Skies were obviously cloudy, but a distinct and pronounced brightening of the overcast is easily apparent from over 200 miles away, indicating the extreme brightness of this fireball.

At 3:30 am I saw the biggest bright green fire ball. It was amazing. I was driving, working...when I first saw it it was at least one block wide and was coming almost straight down. Bright green sort of like a brilliant glow stick but of course much much brighter. Traveling very fast.
It was close or so it seemed. 1/2 a mile from when I was at maybe a mile? Hard to tell the distance. But here on the planes everything is flat so you can see a long ways but it looked from my direction of view to be that far.
It has a small tail that look like there was bright deep red chunks falling behind. It disintegrated to the size of 1-3 house sizes before going out completely. And was only 1000 to 2000 feet from the ground when it went out
When I first say it because of the size and how close it was it scared me. “Oh my God!” I thought.
I would think NASA or someone else had to have tracked this because of it size! Like I said it was HUGH!
I didn’t get any pictures because it came almost straight down but sort of from the north towards the south and traveling VERY fast. I wish I has a dash cam in my car now.
Sincerely,
Mary G

Im a military guy stationed in Long Island NY, I just saw a fireball fitting a similar description around 2130 over NY City. Looked at first like a plane that was coming in very steep, excessive speed, green traces at the front edge. Went dark around a thousand feet up. Looked like it was right over long island sound. Very fast but did not seem to be as fast as other meteor s I have seen. Maybe because of the angle of approach.

I was driving back to Morris, MN about two hours from Sioux Falls, SD on Interstate 90 at 3:24am on 10-19-2011. I was driving all night and I had to make frequent stops to relieve myself. I had stopped and I was facing south, saw a big green flash and heard a very large boom which lit up the horizon in a blueish flash. The object was moving real fast. The rest of the night I saw a number of meteors all the way until the sun rose...
email me at lukemartin@pga.com if you know anything more...
