Only The Second Winter Solstice Total Lunar Eclipse In History !!!
From SpaceWeather.com Posted 12/19/10
RARE LUNAR ECLIPSE: The lunar eclipse of Dec. 20-21 falls on the same date as the northern winter solstice. Is this rare? It is indeed, according to Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory, who inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is Dec. 21, 1638," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on Dec. 21, 2094."
WHEN TO LOOK: The total eclipse lasts more than an hour from 12:41 am to 01:53 am MST on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21st. Any time within that interval is a good time to look. For other time zones, consult Shadow & Substance's animated eclipse.

Total Lunar Eclipse on 12/20-21 Could Boost Underdog Meteor Shower...DEC17,2010
By Joe Rao Space.com...When skywatchers think of meteor showers during the month of December, they immediately think of the Geminids, which over the years have evolved into the most prolific and reliable of the dozen or so annual meteor displays that take place. Meteor News...Awesome Geminids Video From North Texas 12/13-14/10...
Posted from Kevin Palivec Hawley, Texas
This video is compiled from individual captures during the overnight peak of the Geminid Meteor Shower Dec. 13th and 14th, 2010. The camera has an approximate field of view of 40 degrees and points North toward Oklahoma City, OK from Hawley (near Abilene) Texas. Mid video, Orion appears, then sinks toward the Southwest. As the Earth's position within the stream of asteroidal debris changes, so does the apparent radiant and subsequent direction of travel of the meteors. This video is quite stunning and my thanks goes to Kevin Palivec of Hawley, Texas (c) Kevin Palivec 2010-2011. Click play and enjoy the show!

Meteor News...Geminids Image Updated 12/19/10 at 01:48 MST (08:48 UTC)...
The desert skies of El Paso, Texas in the Southwestern U.S. offered some of the best views of this year's Geminid Meteor Shower. Upwards of 120 meteors per hour occured at shower peak although most city dwellers didn't see that many. Best viewing was outside the skyglow of city lights. Please bookmark this site and use it's resources to stay up with the progress of the 2010 Geminid Meteor shower. Clear skies !!
This is a composite image of meteors greater than magnitude -2 captured by the El Paso Allsky Camera since the night of Dec. 6-7, 2010. These are good Geminid candidates and was a great start to the annual shower which peaked the night of Dec. 13-14. More updates to come so bookmark this site and keep watching!

Geminid Meteors Live Count On IMO Website Is Underway !!...12/13/10...
Geminids 2010
The International Meteor Organization
The Geminids is one of the finest, and probably the most reliable, annual meteor shower. Activity exceeds 100 meteors per hour around December 14, with meteors radiating from a point near Castor in constellation Gemini. Geminids are slow, bright and occasionally colorful. Many observers consider the shower to be more spectacular than the famous Perseids in August, but the Geminids are less widely known because of the cold and often clouded December nights in the northern hemisphere.
This year the peak is expected in the morning of December 14 (roughly near 11h UT). Many tens of meteors per hour will be visible in the nights surrounding December 14, with highest rates occuring in the hours after local midnight when the radiant reaches its highest altitude in the sky and the moon has set. More information on the observing conditions can be found in the shower calendar.
The activity graph below is updated every 15 minutes based on visual observing reports submitted to the IMO - click on the graph for "LIVE COUNT".

Meteor News-SpaceWeather.com Update...Dec. 12, 2010...GEMINID METEOR SHOWER
The Geminid meteor shower peaks this year on Dec. 13th and 14th. Forecasters say meteor rates could exceed 100 per hour for observers under dark rural skies. For best results, start your meteor watch on Monday night, Dec. 13th, around midnight. Keep an eye out for Geminids until sunrise on Tuesday, Dec. 14th. There's no special trick to seeing the Geminids. Bundle up for maximum warmth, go outside, lie down and look up. Geminids can appear in any part of the sky, but all their tails will point back to the radiant in the constellation Gemini. Check http://spaceweather.com
for updates, images and a sky map.
