After Saturday’s Eh? column reported someone seeing a “large object with flames coming from the back of it” over Lake County about 5:20 p.m. Aug. 27, several readers called and e-mailed with their observations.
Rita O’Connell said she and her mother, Millicent O’Connell, saw it about 5:23 p.m. when they were at the Moose Lake exit on Interstate 35. “In the sky high in front of us, about due north, we saw a flaming object falling at about an 80 degree angle from high left to lower right,” she wrote.
Robert LaCosse said he saw it in the eastern sky while sailing in the Apostle Islands area.
Callers reported seeing it from Cook County on Caribou Trail about eight miles in from Lutsen; while driving eastbound on Minnesota Highway 210; and while driving north on Woodland Avenue in Duluth.
Jim Graham said he was one of six people on a pontoon boat on Birch Lake, and five of them saw it. “My father-in-law almost knocked me off the captain’s chair, he hit me so hard,” Graham said.
“It was just awesome,” another caller said. “Just the brightest light in the sky I’ve ever seen.”

I witnessed what appears to have been a meteor or fireball day time
event on Saturday August 27th. 2011 at approx. 5:15 PM ct. My location
is 6 miles west of Two Harbors Minnesota 55616. The meteor appeared
for less than 3 seconds as I was facing due north at or about 45
degrees to the horrizon traveling to the east to north east. The
meteor's bright white center was surrounded by a fluroscent blue,
metalic, chrome halo. Smaller than a full moon but larger than the
International Space Station which I have frequently seen orbiting at
night. There were no sonic booms or other sounds to report or any
distinguishable trail.

I was in a parking lot in downtown Norfolk, VA very early this morning, probably right around 4:00am. I happened to look up and saw a very large greenish fireball streak across the sky. I don't know what direction I was facing, but it traveled from my upper right to lower left, lasting a good five seconds. It was actually long-lived enough for me to see it and tell my mom to look too and for her to catch the last little bit of it. It was very impressive, and I thought if it was that bright in the middle of the city, it must have been unbelievably bright out in the country away from the lights!

Good morning, My two boys and I were marveling at the clear Summer evening sky on the coast of Washington State. We are at Grayland State Park just about 5 miles South of Westport. I was looking directly West and saw an intensely bright white light that lasted less than a second. It was not travelling left to right or right to left. It just looked like a super bright star  that appeared and then disappeared just as fast. It provided me a profound sense that I am just a minuscule part of this universe and I also hoped it was a sign of good luck. Any idea what this might have been? It wasn’t a fireball and the color of the light was the same as the stars in the sky that night.     thank you Keith. This was likely an Iridium (communications satellite) flare which can be magnitudes brighter than Venus (-4 visual magnitude) on occasion. IF's can sometimes reach a visual magnitude of -8!

It was visible for 2-3 seconds, unlike the meteors we had been watching tonight, which where lightning speed white streaks. It was about 8:15 pm and I was looking north when i saw A large yellow mass fall from the sky. It had a blueish tint around it with a long green tail. I had the honor of witnessing this meteor as well. Evening of August 18, 2011 about ~ 8:15 pm. While sitting in my living room next to a large western facing window I noticed the sky light up. A second or so later the meteor became visible as it fell into my view as it traveled within the frame of my window. The meteor had a green tail as it fragmented. I tried to use my iphone compass to get an idea of direction. It does not seem to be very accurate as the readings change +/- 15 degrees. According to the iphone compass my windows faces ~270 degrees West and the meteor was traveling ~315 degrees north. good report! Thanks Robert.

On August 18, 2011, about 8 pm, my daughter and I were driving north on I 25 in Colorado Springs. As we approached the Fillmore exit, we both saw a very large bright neon green fireball which suddenly appeared barely to the west of the freeway and a bit to the north. Understanding it is difficult to judge distance or size of something in the night sky, it appeared to be about one exit north of us. It appeared suddenly in view from about the middle of the windshield falling straight down. in about 1 second the light was gone before reaching ground. At the point of the windshield, it looked to be about 2 or 3 inches in diameter.
We were on vacation from Texas and were only in Colorado Springs that night so we were not able to ask around in Colorada Springs to find others who had seen it. I called one of the local tv stations speaking to the news manager who looked in the computer records for that day and found no reports of this sighting. I am so curious if anyone else happened to be looking in the right direction to have seen this. It was so huge in the night sky, it could not have been missed.     congratulations on your sighting Sandy! Thank you for your report.

BREAKING NEWS...UPDATE To 08Aug2011 Ohio Fireball Reports To ELPALLSKY... Ontario Canada Fireball Cameras Capture Possible Meteorite Producing Fireball Over Ohio

NASA Releases Ohio Fireball Data Indicating Meteorite(s) May Be On The Ground In Ohio

On August 8 at 1:22 Eastern Daylight Time, 4 all sky cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network detected a fireball entering the atmosphere 54 miles above Lake Erie (80.944 W, 41.945 N), moving SSE at 25 km/s (55,900 mph). Decelerating rapidly, the meteor was last tracked north of Gustavus (80.667 W, 41.411 N), moving at approximately 10 km/s. Altitude at this point was 38 km (23.6 miles). There is high confidence that this meteor produced meteorites, based on the following indicators:
(1) Deep atmospheric penetration (last tracked to 38 km altitude before it passed out of camera field of fiew. It certainly went deeper)
(2) Significant deceleration
(3) There was a doppler radar signature (KCLE) 2-3 minutes after the event, which indicates debris falling through the atmosphere
Darkflight calculations yield results consistent with the dopper returns. Calculated impact locations as a function of mass are:

1 gram: 80.5027 W, 41.3824 N
10 grams: 80.5163 W, 41.3379 N
100 grams: 80.5158 W, 41.2910 N
1 kilogram: 80.5074 W, 41.2440 N

Brightness/infrasound measurements put the meteor mass in the 10 kilogram range. Fragments are anticipated to be less than 100g in mass.
Attached graphics include a composite of the meteor as seen by the Orangeville camera, a map showing the darkflight impact locations, and a segment from the KCLE radar with the meteor begin and end points labeled.
It is requested that anyone finding fragments of this meteorite note the location of the find and contact this office. Please observe the wishes and rights of all property owners.

Hello,
Was searching for the subject event and came across your website.
I was at home on the deck. It was a clear sky; the moon had not fully risen yet.
The object came from North-west, and while going South-east ( away from me ) the angle of the arc increased, i.e. it didn’t stay at the same height. It took about 4 seconds for the object to go ( what appeared to be ) almost vertically down when it reached my event horizon. My house is 350 meters above sea level.
There was no streak or smoke trail & no fragmentation.
The fire ball was extremely bright; I would say 20 times brighter than Venus.
Years ago, the international space station flew by ( west to east ) right after sunset. The space station was about the same size but not nearly as bright as the fire ball last night and also the apparent speed was much slower.
I established the trajectory by plotting the angle the house sits with respect to South ( using Google map close-up ), and added about 10 degrees because the object when it crossed over was not perpendicular to the street line ( equal the deck line ). In other words, it went a little bit to the left.
I would guess that the object hit the ground somewhere along the yellow trajectory line ( see attachment ).

  Sun was almost set, still visible light in the sky/horizon to the west. I was on my deck having  a cigarette , my eyes where already fixed to the sky above to the north of me.

 The meteor cam out of clear blue/black sky , seemed very close & big. I could see flames & fragmentation debris falling from the sides of it. It was about ½ a thumbs size at arms length. It burned for apx 3 secs then went out falling in the direction of Highway 6 between Caladonia , Ontario & 5^th line on Six Nations territory .

 It came out of the sky with a white vapor behind it, as it descended the flames & front seemed to get bigger, debris falling from it to the sides & back, it looked huge !

 I imagine if it were later in the night about 2 am, it would have lit the sky up a lot ! The flames were huge.
