Ontario Canada Meteor Fireball 12DEC2011

Email From:
Julie C.-Burlington Ontario, Canada:
I was driving eastbound on the Queen Elizabeth Way from Burlington towards Mississauga after work today.  I don't know the exact time, but it was around 6p.  I saw a green ball of light falling across the sky.  At first I thought it was airplane lights, but it was going very fast and downwards as if nose diving.  The sky was dark so I did not have a point of reference.  Then I thought it was fireworks.  It had a tail of light and just vanished.  A few seconds after, two OPP vehicles sped past with their sirens blaring.  I'm not sure if the two are related.  I turned on the radio expecting to hear a news report about it, but did not and have been trying to figure out what it was I saw.  There didn't seem to be any explosions and I couldn't tell how far it was.

IMPACT !!...Ontario Canada Meteor Fireball Likely Put "Rocks On The Ground" Near Selwyn 14DEC2011

University of Western Ontario astronomers get rare video of meteor’s fall near Toronto

Astronomers from the University of Western Ontario have captured on video, a relatively rare occurrence — a meteor, estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, as it falls from the evening sky just outside of Toronto. The bright fireball or meteor travelled through the evening sky east of Toronto on Monday and was captured by a highly advanced video surveillance system from the university.
Six cameras from Western’s Southern Ontario Meteor Network recorded a slow-moving fireball, estimated to be no bigger than a basketball, at 6:04 p.m. It first entered the atmosphere at a shallow angle of 25 degrees at 14 kilometres per second.
The sighting occurred near the peak of the annual Geminid meteor shower, but the meteor is unrelated to that shower.
The meteor, which was the size of a basketball, originates from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and is roughly the age of the solar system and older than any rocks on earth, said Peter Brown, director of Western’s Centre for Planetary and Space Exploration, in an interview with the Star.
Astronomers use the term meteor to describe the fireball as it passes through the atmosphere; prior to entry as it travels in space, it is called a meteoroid and when it lands on Earth it is called a meteorite, Brown said.
This particular meteoroid was part of an asteroid and likely broke off sometime in the last few million or tens of millions years, Brown said. “It has taken a few million years to travel from the asteroid belt to Earth. It just happened on Monday night the orbit of the meteor and Earth intersected.”
And Brown’s surveillance cameras, radar and sound technology were there to record it all in its glory. And now the six different views of the meteor’s descent are on YouTube for the world to watch.
When Brown, a professor in the physics and astronomy department at University of Western, received an automated notification from the network that it had recorded the descent of the meteor, he was excited and hopeful that it might have made its way to Earth. More often than not, meteors burn up in the atmosphere.
It took a day or two, but after calculating its altitude and rate of descent, he was convinced that it likely landed somewhere near the town of Selwyn, Ont., about 160 kilometres northeast of Toronto.
The meteor first became visible over Lake Erie then moved toward the north-northeast ending just south of Selwyn, he explained. Then, as the meteor descended, it likely broke into pieces and dropped several small meteorites — ranging from the size of a softball to grains of sand — along its path.
“Finding a meteorite from a fireball captured by video is equivalent to a planetary sample return mission,” said Brown. “We know where the object comes from in our solar system and can study it in the lab. Only about a dozen previous meteorite falls have had their orbits measured by cameras so each new event adds significantly to our understanding of the small bodies in the solar system.
“It’s equivalent to sending a spacecraft out to an asteroid, grabbing some material and bringing it back for study,” he said.
Each new meteorite studied adds to scientists’ understanding of the formation and evolution of the solar system, Brown said.
And it’s hoped that once rocks from the meteorite are found, Brown and his team can begin studying them. They will look at everything from its mineral make up to its weight, mass and even check for radioactive isotopes. All these things pieces of information are like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle, helping astronomers build a picture of the geology of the solar system, Brown said.
Researchers from Western and the Royal Ontario Museum want to hear from you if you witnessed the meteor falling to Earth, recorded the event yourself or have found fragments of the fallen meteorite and are asking people to contact Kimberly Tait at ktait@rom.on.ca.
Brown also asks if you live in any of the small towns or communities near the fall zone — such as Clarina, Gilchrist Bay, Woodview and Stony Ridge, all around upper Stony Lake — that you be on the lookout for meteorites. And if you find any, contact the ROM.

Ontario, Canada Meteor Fireball 23OCT2011

Email From:
Jennifer B.-Windsor Ontario, Canada:
Hey my name is Jennifer im 24 from Windsor Ontario Canada.
I was googling about meteors because lastnight around 10.30pm I was standing in my back yard having a ciggarette looking up at stars, was just a beautiful night and was luckly enough to catch a meteor fly literally over our back yard,
It resembled a fire cracker, yet no noise. It was SUPER bright and low in the sky and lasted merely 3 seconds. It took me a sec to process what I had just seen, but was truly a specticle....
Then tonight I seen a shooting star, so with the two in the last two days figured I would google since, I have never seen that here in windsor before and came across your website.
Hope that helps you out.
Have a great day.  Thank you Jennifer! Canadians...If you saw this event, please post your sighting to wxtx01@gmail.com Thanks!

Daylight Fireball Seen From Ontario, Manitoba Canada To Minnesota 27AUG2011 5:20 P.M. CDT

Daylight Fireball Observed Across Upper Mid West U.S. And Southeastern Canada 27AUG2011 ~5:20 P.M. CDT (22:20 UTC)

After Saturday’s Eh? column reported someone seeing a “large object with flames coming from the back of it” over Lake County about 5:20 p.m. Aug. 27, several readers called and e-mailed with their observations.
Rita O’Connell said she and her mother, Millicent O’Connell, saw it about 5:23 p.m. when they were at the Moose Lake exit on Interstate 35. “In the sky high in front of us, about due north, we saw a flaming object falling at about an 80 degree angle from high left to lower right,” she wrote.
Robert LaCosse said he saw it in the eastern sky while sailing in the Apostle Islands area.
Callers reported seeing it from Cook County on Caribou Trail about eight miles in from Lutsen; while driving eastbound on Minnesota Highway 210; and while driving north on Woodland Avenue in Duluth.
Jim Graham said he was one of six people on a pontoon boat on Birch Lake, and five of them saw it. “My father-in-law almost knocked me off the captain’s chair, he hit me so hard,” Graham said.
“It was just awesome,” another caller said. “Just the brightest light in the sky I’ve ever seen.”

BREAKING NEWS...UPDATE To 08Aug2011 Ohio Fireball Reports To ELPALLSKY... Ontario Canada Fireball Cameras Capture Possible Meteorite Producing Fireball Over Ohio

NASA Releases Ohio Fireball Data Indicating Meteorite(s) May Be On The Ground In Ohio

Aug 17, 2011, at 9:46 AM, Cooke, William J. (MSFC-EV44)
On August 8 at 1:22 Eastern Daylight Time, 4 all sky cameras belonging to the Southern Ontario Meteor Network detected a fireball entering the atmosphere 54 miles above Lake Erie (80.944 W, 41.945 N), moving SSE at 25 km/s (55,900 mph). Decelerating rapidly, the meteor was last tracked north of Gustavus (80.667 W, 41.411 N), moving at approximately 10 km/s. Altitude at this point was 38 km (23.6 miles). There is high confidence that this meteor produced meteorites, based on the following indicators:
(1) Deep atmospheric penetration (last tracked to 38 km altitude before it passed out of camera field of fiew. It certainly went deeper)
(2) Significant deceleration
(3) There was a doppler radar signature (KCLE) 2-3 minutes after the event, which indicates debris falling through the atmosphere
Darkflight calculations yield results consistent with the dopper returns. Calculated impact locations as a function of mass are:

1 gram: 80.5027 W, 41.3824 N
10 grams: 80.5163 W, 41.3379 N
100 grams: 80.5158 W, 41.2910 N
1 kilogram: 80.5074 W, 41.2440 N

Brightness/infrasound measurements put the meteor mass in the 10 kilogram range. Fragments are anticipated to be less than 100g in mass.
Attached graphics include a composite of the meteor as seen by the Orangeville camera, a map showing the darkflight impact locations, and a segment from the KCLE radar with the meteor begin and end points labeled.
It is requested that anyone finding fragments of this meteorite note the location of the find and contact this office. Please observe the wishes and rights of all property owners.

Fragmenting Canada Meteor Fireball ~9 p.m. EDT 13AUG2011 Reported To ELPALLSKY... MORE REPORTS NEEDED PLEASE !!

Email From:
David S.-Ontario, Canada:
Saturday Aug 13/11  9:00 pm apx
I live at (address on file)
Ohsweken, ON N0A 1M0
Sun was almost set, still visible light in the sky/horizon to the west. I was on my deck having  a cigarette , my eyes where already fixed to the sky above to the north of me.
The meteor cam out of clear blue/black sky , seemed very close & big. I could see flames & fragmentation debris falling from the sides of it. It was about ½ a thumbs size at arms length. It burned for apx 3 secs then went out falling in the direction of Highway 6 between Caladonia , Ontario & 5th line on Six Nations territory .
It came out of the sky with a white vapor behind it, as it descended the flames & front seemed to get bigger, debris falling from it to the sides & back, it looked huge !
I imagine if it were later in the night about 2 am, it would have lit the sky up a lot ! The flames were huge.
Thx
David S

I live in columbus Ohio and seen a green fireball very big as like a huge basketball falling from the sky. It was going north to south at I would say a 45° angle. I didn't hear no sounds or nothing but im very interested in knowing what it is and what actually happens to it when it hits the ground. If I had to say where it was headed I would say canada would be the location, that's the way I was looking at it. Time was around 1:20 EDT in the morning
Thanks don     thank you Don!

Marian S.-Hamilton, Ontario Canada:
Driving south on Gage Avenue from Burlington Street in Hamilton Ontario approx. 1:20 am EDT August 8, 2011 we saw a meteor as described by Don F.-Columbus OH.
Teresa and Marian     thanks for the confirmation Marian!

Abe G.-Windsor, Ontario:
Report from my sister as she was driving east on Talbot Road from Windsor Ontario Canada towards Maidstone on Monday August 8th at about 1:15am.
She witnessed a fireball falling at about a 45 degree angle from the north to south. She saw it as she was driving by the gas station that’s on the north side of the road just before Maidstone (the old Big Chief Gas Station). She believes it landed less than a quarter mile to her right in a field. She described it as having a long white tail with blue and red flames at the end of the tail. She is sure that it was not extinguished before it hit the ground.
I have given the best description I can from what she just told me over the phone. I plan to drive with her to the location this week and will update you if any of the above information is inaccurate. Reports from any other witnesses would be appreciated.   thank you Abe! Please see above reports for verification

Report To ELPALLSKY From A Reader In Ontario, Canada of 3 bright fireballs in a short amount of time.
If you observed this/these event(s), please submit a report to wxtx01@gmail.com with your observation. Thank you.
E-mail From:
P. Stowe-Ontario, Canada:
As I entered my backyard at approximately 9:45, I saw the first fireball of 3 that appeared over Burlington, Ontario, Canada within a 15 minute span.
All 3 fireballs were extremely bright red/orange and moved from West to North in the sky. From my standpoint, they were all quite large in comparison to any shooting stars that I have ever seen, and definitely moved much slower. I actually ran inside, got my camera and tried to film them, with very little success. I did get some very blurry shots, however, nothing that helped me to identify the objects.
If anyone knows what these fireballs are, I would love to hear from you.
I am always watching the sky hoping to see something amazing...and tonight it happened.

Breaking Meteor News...Possibly 2 Or More Major Green Meteor Fireballs Seen From Illinois, Indiana, Ontario, Quebec 10:30 PM EDT 09APR2011 To 12:50 AM EDT 10APR2011...

Mike Sullivan Writes:
around 11:50(April 9th) I was outside having a smoke talking to a friend facing west, when a basketball size green fireball flew right over our neighberhood and it looked like it went out and down just over the neighborhood, never saw one so big and close....Immediately yelled to my friend who was faceing east and pointed to the sky(ooh look!), she turnedaround in time to also see it, at first he said she thought it was fireworks, but no I explained to her it fell from the sky...sh was excited about getting to see it,I have been searching for it but no luck, however when I took my dog to the park and bent down to tie my shoe I found what looks like meteorite I think it may be from the one which flew over the nighborhood because the projectile location was on target...had to be a 300 pounder when i saw it... Mike, please e-mail a picture of what you found...wxtx01@gmail.com Thanks!

Maryville Illinois sighting
I was going for a drive and looked up at the sky to see what I thought was a shooting star but it was greenish and bright. It was about 10:30 pm saturday night aprill 9th 2011. That was the strangest thing I have ever seen in the sky.
My name is Billy H. From Maryville Illinois   thank you!

Jeanne M.-NY State E-mail's...I saw it around 12:45AM on April 10th!  Williamson, New York.  Thought I was losing my mind - had been watching Doctor Who on Netflix all day and I happened to look up out the hal moon window in our bedroom (facing north) and saw a green light streak roughly NW.  Woke my husband up and he told me to quit watching BBC sci-fi shows...  :p  It was amazing!  thank you Jeanne!

Gregory Maza-Ontario Writes...I was driving from Stratford toward Kitchener, (Ontario, Canada) approaching to the intersection of the Highway #7 and Trussler Rd. when I saw that beautiful spectacle. In about 1.5 seconds a bolide on my front/left (North-East) went down in straight angle (or close to 90 degrees). I checked the time immediately, 12:47 am – April 10-2010. It had fragmentation at least two or three pieces before reach ground (I sure it landed). It was intense yellow, orange and some blue and left a persistent train for about another 1 or 2 seconds, yellow to white before disappear in grey. Apparent magnitude close to -11. As I said I was driving in a car on the highway (windows closed), so no sound could be heard. It was amazing!  thank you Gregory...fine example of a good fireball report!

Elaine B Writes...Hi I saw it! I was beginning to think I was iminagining it until I found this..... Sometime during Saturday night live I was looking out my window and said to everyone "what the heck was that!" I saw a large green light shoot through the sky going from south to north.  glad you saw it Elaine. your location please? thank you!

Georganna & Ariana Email...My daughter and I were traveling East on Hwy 56 near Vevay Indiana. When we witnessed a bright reddish orange fireball. The fireball was traveling North over or near the Ohio River in what appeared to be a downward arch. It was amazing. This occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m.  Thanks.  thank you but is this possibly a typo? 4:30 p.m.?

First Response Ontario, Canada...Hi - my name's Darren Moore. I saw the same meteor tonight, about three hours ago, (approx). I was out for a bike ride, and quite honestly, had stopped in the large park I had been going through and went into the shadows away from the trail to 'take a leak'. While I was thus occupied, a bright green flash lit the area like daylight; I thought a spotlight had come on. I looked up immediately and saw a massive white ball traveling through the sky from SE to NW, right above my position. I am in Belleville, Ontario, Canada. There was no noise associated  with it - at least, not above mild urban noise. The park is beside a bay and quite dark away from the lit trail. A few minutes later, a loud rumble was heard in the NW direction - the object had 'gone out' before leaving my field of vision in an otherwise clear sky. Hope this helps - I've been googling for a while; glad I found your post.

If you could, please share other's stories, should you get some. I imagine you will - it was phenomenally bright - brightest I've ever seen. Darren, great report! thank you as this helps alot!

Dominic and Shannon, Elkhart IN Write...My wife and i saw the meteor last night  we were facing due west at 11:58 pm eastern time, it was a large bright white light with a green corona and left what looked like a debris trail when it was getting lower in the sky, it was traveling south to north. The most incredible and large meteor we have ever seen looked very large, we weren't even sure what it was until we found this site. Thought maybe we were the only people who saw it.  thank you Dominic and Shannon!
