Meteor Explosion Surprises Pacific Island Nation of Niue 04AUG2011...Story From Space.com

Just Released Story From SPACE.COM Describes Massive Meteor Fireball Explosion Over Niue Roughly 1750 Miles NE of Wellington New Zealand and 300 Miles South Of American Samoa

Italian astrophotographer Lorenzo Lovato photographed this spectacular fireball from the 1998 Leonid meteor shower on Nov. 17, 1998.
A meteor that exploded over the Pacific Ocean last week gave a late-night shock to the residents of the small island nation of Niue, according to press reports. Niue police officials say the exploding meteor created a huge bang over the island, waking up some of the 1,200 people who call Niue home, the Agence-France Presse reported.
Officials with New Zealand's Carter Observatory said the bang was most likely a fireball from a meteor exploding about 12 1/2 miles (25 km) above Niue.

One potential source of the fireball is the Perseid meteor shower, which is currently underway and is expected to peak on Aug. 13, though the bright full moon may outshine the "shooting star" display.
AFP reported that the bang occurred Wednesday night (Aug. 3), though Radio New Zealand stated that the event occurred on Tuesday evening (Aug. 2).
Mark Chenery, chief of Niue's police force, told Radio New Zealand that there were no reports of damage, though he initially thought that a boat had exploded at the Niue wharf. Radio New Zealand reported that the bang actually occurred Tuesday night (Aug. 2).
"There was a large, a huge clap of thunder but it was its normal starry night outside," Chenery told Radio New Zealand. "People have described seeing a white light, like a flare, shooting across the sky … it was certainly heard island-wide."
Meteor explosions and fireballs are caused when a space rock enters Earth's atmosphere, but does not reach the ground to become a meteorite. While most meteors burn up and disintegrate, some can explode to create dazzlingly loud fireballs.

FIRST DISCOVERY...Scientists Find Opal-Like Crystals In Tagish Lake, Canada Meteorite Fall

First opal-like crystals discovered in meteorite

Scientists have found opal-like crystals in the Tagish Lake meteorite, which fell to Earth in Canada in 2000. This is the first extraterrestrial discovery of these unusual crystals, which may have formed in the primordial cloud of dust that produced the sun and planets of our solar system 4.6 billion years ago, according to a report in the Journal of the American Chemical Society....MORE ON THIS DISCOVERY HERE!

Michelle-Sarasota, FL:
I witnessed an amazing fireball in the sky on the evening of Saturday August 6th, 2011 between Apx 11:00pm & 11:30pm in Sarasota, FL.
The fireball was a bright blue & green in color with a white tail......I was sitting indoors at the time with the lights turned down very low. The windows in the living room face east and it gives me a very good view of the night sky from where i was sitting.  The fireball was arching in the sky and moving from a west to east direction (heading east). We live about a half mile west of McIntosh Middle School in Sarasota, and i'm quite sure the direction of travel of this fireball would have been east and going right over this school.
I'm not sure of the altitude or height from the ground, but it did appear to be quite low and arching down towards the earth and at a steady rate of speed.
Do these size and type of fireballs aften impact the earth?.....and from ones that are witnessed, are the impact locations and the debris often found??
Are these witnessed fireballs often large in size?
Did anyone else witness this particular fireball?.........any information would be very interesting & appreciated.
Thanks.
Michelle.
Sarasota, FL.     thank you Michelle! Excellent report! I've sent you an email in response to your questions...thanks again!

Robin C.-Orlando, FL:
I know you already received confirmation from someone else, but I just wanted to respond as well since I'm in a different part of the state. This was visible from Orlando (central Florida) as well. I was sitting on my back porch reading and shortly after 11:00 PM I glanced up and saw this ball arching through the sky away from me. I'm horrible with the whole NSEW thing, so I can't tell you for sure the direction. The front was wide, the tail was short in comparison to the width and even from that distance it looked like the tip could almost be red...like something burning up.
We haven't seen anything on the news so I was really curious about what this could have been.
Thanks.
Robin   thank you Robin!

Kimberly N.-Estero, FL:
Sat aug 6, 2011 aprox 11:00pm Facing east saw a glowing green ball moving very fast through the clouds from west to east was not as large as a full moon but maybe 1/3 as large and as bright.  No sound at all, sighting only lasted for a couple of seconds.  Never saw any thing like it before, often look up at the night sky.     thanks Kimberly!

Anonymous-Sarasota, FL:
Approx. 11:00 pm I saw an incredible green light streaking the sky, west to east. It was amazingly bright and linear, like a giant glow stick flying through the sky. It was so fast that by the time I got my family to turn around, it was gone. Of course they thought I had imagined it...so I'm so happy to find these other posts!!     thanks whoever you are!

Cindy S.-Winter Haven, FL:
I posted on my facebook page immediatley after i seen the fireball- star- meteor- what ever it was, it was absolutely awesome.   It was the evening of aug. 6 @ 11:15 pm   I was on the end of the dock on lake grassy in Winter Haven Fl fishing when it first caught my eye. Up in the sky, over the top of my head ,it seemed to fall , almost float down. It was so close I thought it was gonna splash into the water.I was facing south, so if you say from my positioning it would be 11 oclock in the direction of the sky when I first seen it. It didnt come straight down, only slightly from a left to right
angle. As it came down it was a very bright orange  firey but not red color. When it fell through the clouds the whole cloud was glowing color.  The same bright color of the object. As it broke through each cloud it seemed to magnify in light. But what was the most exciting thing of all, was how dang close the thing was. It seemed hughe! I really thought if it was gonna hit in the water in front of me, I was surely gonna get wet. This thing was close. Very Very close. I was so excited i went running  back inside as quick as i could and posted my sighting on facebook. I am including a copy of it for you.                                                                                                                                                                &n bsp;

Here is my status from the night of 8 6 2011  Thanks for letting me share and good luck  Cindy Sanford                                                Remove Post

I was just out on the dock fishing, and you just wouldnt believe the most awesome falling, not shooting, but falling star I just seen!!! It was so close , that as it fell down through the clouds, it illuminated the whole cloud with these bright beautiful firey colors. It was so close I thought it would splash the water in front of me!!! (Chyrl, you better check your backyard , it may had fallen over there.. LOL!! PRAISE YOU LORD! For such a magnificent sight!

bmotzkin-Lake Mead, AZ:
On Saturday 8-6-11 I saw a green streak in the sky. It had a tail with a greenish ball at the end. It happened sometime around dusk, maybe close to 7:45-8:00 pm. We were at Temple Bar Marina on the water near the fuel dock at Lake Mead in AZ looking back towards the restaurant. I would say it traveled from the South to the West and fell from the left to the right as it fell. It did not hit land and there was not any noise.     thank you! This certainly helps!
