Naked eye observation
Two observers, ages 57 and 12.
I am an amature astronomer.
No cloud cover at time of observation.
City lights.
Observers had been outside for 1/2 hour so our vision was dark adapted.

Apparant diameter of fireball:
Start: bright Venus
End : 3/4 diameter of full moon

At the time the observation was made the moon was visible, with parameters
(from Sky View Café set to my coordinates)
Azimuth : 14° 14' 12''
Altitude: 42° 38' 56''
Magnitude: -12.0
Illuminated fraction: 92.9%
Angular diameter: 33.39'

As the moon was visible at the time of my observation,
I have confidence in brightness and size comparisons relative to full moon.

On May 14, 2011 I say a fireball in El Paso Texas. I was facing west between 11:45pm and 12:00am when i looked up and say a bright red fireball streak across the sky and go behind the franklin mountains. I didn't hear any noise and the fireball was pretty large in size. I don't know if it was a comet, meteor,  or what? Can you validate what i say? Contact me with any questions on what i saw.
Andrea P. In Tucson, AZ:
Hi I was at a party last night in downtown Tucson, Arizona when I saw the fireball (maybe 10:30 or 11?)  I worked teaching astronomy for years in very dark skies (compared to urban Tucson at near full moon!)  but I have NEVER seen anything so spectacular. I saw it in the eastern sky, moving from south to north. At first it was white light, getting brighter and brighter and leaving a trail, but then it burst into multi-colored light and several pieces (10?), each of which burned in twinkling colors.  It was SO bright! most people at the party thought it was some sort of firework a neighbor had set off. (you were looking for descriptions for elp allsky, right?)
no pics, sadly!

Bright Meteor Fireball Alberta Canada, MT, ID 14MAY2011...

Bright Yellow Fireball Southern AB Canada May Have Also Been Seen In Montana And Idaho...
Email From:

Stephanie SS ( Calgary, AB, Canada):
Hello, I was driving south on HWY 2 (QE2 HWY) just passing Bowden Alberta, traveling to Calgary Alberta.  It was a relatively clear sky and initially thought it was an airplane dropping from the sky.  It was bright yellow, and I may have heard a whistling noise.  My daughter was the passenger, and just saw the last of it, before it hit the horizon.  Did not see any impact flashes, or debris (dust cloud, etc).  I suspect it burned up before impact.  Seen many falling stars, but never one so large. It was shortly after 2am, Mountain Standard...on May 14, 2011

Sadie MacD-Kootenay BC
We live on the east shore of Kootenay lake in south eastern B.C.  Last night at around 1:30 am, we saw a bright flash of light that lasted slightly longer than lightning.  There were no clouds in the sky.  About 45 seconds later, we heard a long, rolling thunder-like sound that lasted almost a minute.  A friend was driving north along the lake road and saw a meteor and thought it landed in the lake.  He said it was as big as a house.  Rumors around here say it landed in Llyodminister, Alberta.

***Readers...This was also possibly seen from Montana and Idaho. If you witnessed this event, please email your description including time, date, location, which way you were facing, direction object traveled (right to left etc. is OK), color, any fragmentation or extremely bright flashes, and any sounds heard i.e. booms, hisses etc. to wxtx01@gmail.com  Thank you for your report***

Coincidental Australia ISS Fly-Over AND Early Morning Large Bright Green Bolide Event Confuse Perth Residents, Astronomers, And Local Media 10MAY2011

From ELPALLSKY 11MAY2011:
Local Astronomers And Media In Perth Australia Pass Off May 10 Morning Fireball Bolide As ISS...Somewhat Substantiable, BUT WRONG.

In Fact, there was a visible ISS (International Space Station) pass over Perth Australia the morning of May 10th, 2011 at 22:05 UTC (06:05 a.m. AWST). Problem is, the fireball/bolide sightings ranged from 05:45 a.m. to 05:51 a.m....15 to 20 minutes BEFORE the ISS was to fly over the Southwestern coastal city, and while the Station was still over the Southern tip of Africa. At least one local astronomer passed it off simply as the ISS, and local media apparently did not bother to check out the huge discrepancy in timing. Below is a series of depictions from Orbitron (satellite tracking software) beginning at 5:45 a.m. and going through 06:05 a.m. showing the location of the ISS at 5 minute intervals. Based on numerous eyewitness reports, ELPALLSKY believes there, in fact, WAS a substantial meteor/bolide event. We are attempting to obtain images of the fireball and will post immediately if/when they are made available. In the graphics below, the time stamp on each is UTC (Greenwich Mean Time) and the date will show as May 9th, 2011. Click on each picture to enlarge.

I saw the object coming down from the sky i was about Lederville / West Perth on my push bike heading to work, it was green really bright with a little tail and was losing bits as was going down, direction from south to north, it wasn't for sure the international spaceship, i saw it before and it's nothing like that, plus that object was clearly coming down and clearly really close and inside the atmosphere, i reckon could be landed around Bayswater Dianella suburb area.

Email From Ohio:
Yes!! Hi. We live in Van Wert Ohio. My fiance yelled for me to come outside around 10pm. He was very excited about something. When I reached the doorway I looked up and saw a ball of fire moving from the west to the east. It was just above some of the cloud cover. There were two that I could see. Odd thing was they were moving slowly. And I noticed a tail of fire off of them. Then what happened next scared us both. One moved very swiftly to the left then far to the right. Then directly back to the middle path it was following. I then left to go get my son. I have never seen anything like this. And I happen to love the night skies and what they have to offer. This was scary for us both. My fiance said there ended up being three of them and they kept traveling east. Does anyone know what they were? Or did anyone else see this?

Meteor Shower From Halley's Comet Set To Peak This Friday 06May2011...

The Eta Aquarids might be the best meteor shower that you've never heard of. This shower is caused by flecks of dust released from the nucleus of Halley's Comet. It stays near full strength for five days — longer than any comparably intense shower — and its meteors are bright and plentiful.

So why isn't it better known? More from Sky and Telescope Magazine

UPDATE...Colorado Green Meteor Fireball 03MAY2011 Captured By Denver Science Museum All Sky Camera...

Email From:
Raymond G.-Denver CO:
Last night - May 3 around 11 PM - I went out on my west facing porch here at S. Steele Street and Louisiana in Denver, and was stunned to see what looked like a firework exploding to the west, northwest, over the city of Denver. Very bright chunks of light, lasting very briefly, and then disappearing. I thought it was fireworks at first, but it clearly was something else. So I got on line first thing this morning, and saw your website.
I hope this is helpful, and look forward to hearing more.   so do we, and thanks Raymond!

Leslie C.-Denver CO:
Hi, I just came across your website when searching online for something similar to what I saw in the sky tonight (may 3rd tues). I live just north of downtown denver, and went out in the backyard to hang up laundry when I saw it just past the rooftops- it was really close- about the size of your hand when you hold it up compared to the stars. it was greenish blue like a really hot flame with white/yellowish around it and a tail. I think I was facing west or slightly southwest and it went from left to right very low in the sky.  It looked like it landed maybe 20 blocks away or something. I thought someone was shooting off a firework at first, but it was so huge and rectangular in shape, not round. Have you heard from anyone else about this? Is it a fireball or something else? Please let me know if you find out. Thanks, Leslie   Excellent report, thank you Leslie! Time?

Possible Northern California Meteor Fireball 30APR2011...

Email From:

Toni Chiapelli-N CAL:

I went online this morning to research the fireball meteorite and found your inquiry asking for more information. I live in San Anselmo, CA just north of San Francisco. At approximately 10pm I witnessed a huge fireball meteorite/asteroid rip across the sky in a firery orange display. I also noticed soft billowy tree or feather-like formations that were not clouds but rather had more of an etheric quality. After some online research, I discovered that we had a geomagnetic storm last night.
