Early Morning L.A. Area Meteor Fireball 03JUN2011...

E-Mail From:

Charla P.-Burbank, CA:
Hi! I'm in Burbank, California and it passed right between (I think it was) Jupiter and Venus, about the size of Jupiter (maybe a bit bigger because it was aglow), with a tail about 3 to 4 times the size of the ball, and it lasted (I'm guessing here because it disappeared behind the rooftops) about 3 seconds. 5:10 or 5:15AM, Friday, June 3. I got more than I bargained for when I set the alarm to get up to see the aligned planets. Very cool.
Best,
Charla     thanks for the heads up Charla!

Large Northeast US Coast Green Meteor Fireball Indicated By FITS 29MAY2011

Green Possibly Large Fireball Event Seen From Many East Central-Northeast US Coast Witnesses 29MAY2011
E-mail From:

Katie U.-VA:
My husband and I were driving in 2 separate vehicles on the night (11:00 pm) of Sunday May 29, 2011 on Rt. 288 northbound in Midlothian Virginia and independently saw a neon green fireball with a red/orange tail in the sky traveling from the southwest to the northwest.  When we got home we both asked the other about it. I just googled that information and saw your web page for that night and I'm amazed!

Greg H.-PA:
Location 20 miles east of Pittsburgh PA…around 10:00 pm EST. large green halo fireball, traveling east to west, descending at ~315 deg (360 being parallel with horizon). Gave the appearance of descending firework remnant, but traveling at high velocity. If viewing distance was known, could approximate velocity of descent

Slainte 227 Hampden, Maine 8:30-9:00 PM:
sky not dark, lime -greenish bright light with trail, no sound, we were facing south, object moved from left to right lasting 10 seconds approximately. Seen by two of us.

John L.-West Virginia:
Around 11:00PM EDT on Sunday night 29 May we saw a large meteor, travelling roughly South to North.  First appeared perhaps 20 deg East of zenith, rapidly became brighter, head appeared in two parts and brilliant blue-white with hint of green, tail appeared reddish. It disappeared over mountain to out North.  It was bright enough to illuminate the ground
We are near Marlinton, WV, USA. We saw in the hours before and after this event several small unremarkable meteors travelling on the same apparent heading. Where can I find out more about this event?  Did any of it reach the ground?     haven't heard of any rocks on the ground yet. thank you!

David H.-Brinklow Maryland:
last night while checking out the Amazing fireflies, we saw a HUGE green fireball in the Western sky.  It looked like a large firework moving from the upper southern sky heading to the lower northern sky (left to right).  It was around 10:30 pm.  A very brilliant sight!  We didn't notice any noises associated with it though.

R.M. & Associates-North Carolina:
Me and my wife also saw this odd color falling star, meteor or
whatever you call it.  We were headed south on HWY 54 in North
Carolina around Saxapahaw NC and was able to view this for about 7
seconds or longer.
Never has a falling star or shooting star taken this long to go out of
eye sight.

Dylan V.-Maine:
I was sitting outside Empire Dine and Dance last night at approx. 9:30 when I saw a fireball in the sky.  it looked as if it were becoming present at a normal flight hight of the planes that leave the airport in south portland and fly over.  Two of us saw it and noted it's trajectory.  it did not make it to the other side of the building, probably burned out.  it was a bright white/orange/almost electric color.  it came in heading in a north-westerly direction.

Patrick S.-Oak Grove Theater, Verona, VA:
We were in the middle of a performance when it happened. We actors heard the crowd murmuring and talking as it happened and after the show most of the audience reported a bright and spectacular meteor(?) arcing from audience right to audience left in the sky above the set on stage.  It is an outdoor stage and to be seen above the set would put it in an east to west direction at least midway up from the horizon in the northern part of the sky.  They were taping the performance last night so it might be possible it was caught on video.  We guessed the time to around 9:50 to 10:20 EST but don't know for certain because we were mid scene when it happened.     PLEASE forward any video to wxtx01@gmail.com Thank You!

Cathy R.-Danvers MA:
May 29, 2011, around 9 PM, 5 people saw orange balls. first one, then two closer together, then 4-5 more moving from southeast, about 20 degrees above horizon, in an arc toward the north to about 35 degrees above the horizon before they disappeared behind the treeling about 30 feet from the east-facing porch we were seated on...they were larger than the largest I've seen Venus when it is low on the horizon and as bright...they moved silently and at a smooth steady and regular pace...not like anything I've ever seen before...what were they?     fragmenting meteor/fireball called a "bolide". Thank you!

David L.-Duxbury, MA:
Last night may 29th about 8:30pm we were outside on our farm which is in Duxbury MA.
We are on the bay and have an unobstructed view of the ocean.
We saw an object that looked like a meteor going north from the south; we were looking due east. The color of the trail was dark aqua color; it lasted approximately 4 seconds. The flight pattern was nearly parallel with the ground and the horizon. At the end of the trail the color turned from green to bright red and disappeared. We live in a rural area with expansive views.

It was very large, and very bright - impossible to miss! It wasn't as fast as a normal meteor, and it appeared to disintegrate around the horizon line. I remember it being very large and bright, but unsure of a color. Totally amazed me, and very curious as to what it was. 9:00 at night *

May 28 2011, 11:30 PM (guest): John G, at around 1215 am I saw a flash of green light in Austin Texas on the outskirts of Westlake. It looked to be headed down and seemed to have landed near my house. I'll have to go take a look tomorrow morning

E-mail From:

Vin T.-Texas:
My name is Vinh and I live in Katy, TX.  It was shortly after midnight this past Saturday 5/29 that my son and I both saw a bright object that shot across the southern sky and appeared to have touched down on earth.  We heard no sound at all but the object was very bright, sort of blueish/greenish white color that was much larger than a typical shooting start across the sky.  We have not seen anything on the news regarding this.  Any info you can confirm and share with us would be much appreciated!

M. Ranch-Texas:
Minutes after midnight Saturday nite (now Sun.May 29) about 12: 01-10 am, my friend and I were taking a walk thru our neighborhood (Mopac & Slaughter-Austin,Tx.) We left the house heading from west to east looking at the beautiful stars when suddenly right above us the most brilliant white ball of lite came streaking across the nite sky heading from west to east. The height appeared to resemble a large jet on its landing approach (no sound though). The large lite appeared to head in the direction of our downtown Hwy.71 & Congress Av.).  The entire event for us lasted 3-5 seconds and it was "Awe-inspiring"!

Joey R.-Deweyville, TX:
was camped on a sandbar on the sabine river above deweyville (southeast texas) and it was late in the evening, looking south i saw a huge meteor, not your average shooting star, this was a fireball. I have never seen anything like it, it shot across the sky low and into the treeline and disappeared. i didnt hear anything, but i thought that surely there would be an impact. It went from east to west near orion. this was on 5-29-11, probably close to midnight. didnt notice the color other than it was like a fireball, breaking up and leaving a trail, quite spectacular. not green, more like white/orange and fiery.

ITS Indicates Possible Green Fireball Houston TX 25MAY2011...

Email From:

Luis Mata-San Antonio, TX:
I was outside my southside home facing west, looking up at the night sky when I saw a what I thought was a plane traveling across the sky.  It looked like a white ball of light traveling across the sky at high rate of speed.  I knew it couldn't  be a jet because I have seen many jets fly across the night sky,  and this object had no underbelly strobe light flashing,  as most jets have.  This was about 9:00 pm -9:30pm,  approximately.  I got curious and started searching for any reports of this rare object sighting.  Please keep me posted.
I  am on the southside of san antonio and the object was traveling at a great rate of speed. Almost about the same rate of speed the space station was traveling when it went over san antonio's western sky.  The space station was visible from my roof top and it appeared as a white ball of light,  just like this object.  Only the space station was traveling from the nw skyies heading se.  I just happened to be outside looking up at the sky.
I normally look for Orion and this ball of light just happened to catch my attention.  These have been strange sightings that I have seen.  I didn't even know that we were going to get a meteor shower.

E-Mail From:

J. Maxwell-Grand Canyon, AZ:
I saw this fireball. I was in the Grand Canyon, camped at mile 131 below Lee’s Ferry. I was facing upstream. The fireball passed almost directly over my head, heading also upstream. Sorry I can’t tell you N for sure as being in the Canyon is slightly disorienting, but I think that means it traveled from NE to SW.     thank you Professor!
