Only The Second Winter Solstice Total Lunar Eclipse In History !!!

RARE LUNAR ECLIPSE: The lunar eclipse of Dec. 20-21 falls on the same date as the northern winter solstice. Is this rare? It is indeed, according to Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory, who inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is Dec. 21, 1638," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on Dec. 21, 2094."

WHEN TO LOOK: The total eclipse lasts more than an hour from 12:41 am to 01:53 am MST on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21st. Any time within that interval is a good time to look. For other time zones, consult Shadow & Substance's animated eclipse.

Guest241 (guest): WED 12-15-10 @ ~8:00 pm, Lake Jackson, TX, 29.04°N 95.44°W (Elev. 13 ft) beautiful meteor in WSW. At ~30 degrees above horizon -- broke into two distinct parts. Guessing fell between San Antonio and El Paso.

BrandyK (guest): Saw a huge fireball lasted about 3 seconds in the East sky traveling southwest in Midland, TX. It was a beautiful bright blue! One of the coolest things I have ever seen! I believe it was 10pm to 11:30 we don't sit outside until after 9pm and we had been out there a while.

First UK Meteor Fireball Video Posted...UK Fireball Video Dec. 8, 2010...

The first video to emerge following the appearance of a bright meteor/fireball over the UK on Dec. 8, 2010 shows no apparent detonation. Witnesses closer to the meteor's path however report fragmentation toward the end of lighted flight. In the video below, posted on Youtube by "johnnythefixer", the fireball becomes visible just right of top center and lasts approx. 5 to 6 seconds. "This is the meteor that flew across the sky on 8th December. I caught it on the camera in my car. I had just driven past Ken Dodd's house, and noticed it shooting across the sky". Video was shot from Merseyside, Liverpool, England. at 17:35 UTC.

The El Paso Tx allsky camera recorded this long duration event on our northern horizon at 02:01:33 UTC...19:01:33 MST on Nov. 16. Stations to my north have been alerted and may provide imagery from northern NM shortly...updates to follow...
