Draconid Meteor Shower To Peak 08OCT2011...Some Predict A Meteor Storm With 1000+ Meteors Per Hour

 From EarthSky

Astronomer predicts dramatic Draconid meteor shower for October 8, 2011

People are asking if the U.K. is the best place to view the predicted October 8 Draconid meteor storm. Maybe. The prediction favors all of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

A predicted brief meteor storm for October 8

Canadian astronomer Paul Wiegert announced earlier in 2011 that the annual Draconid meteor shower might produce a brief meteor storm of 1,000 meteors per hour on October 8, 2011.
He said the 2011 Draconid outburst could be expected to occur between 17 and 18 UTC on October 8. This translates into between noon and 1 p.m. Central Daylight Time on October 8 in the U.S. – daylight in North America. Because this shower’s radiant point in the constellation Draco is so far north on the sky’s dome, the shower will be visible primarily in the northern hemisphere. Plus Draco is highest in the sky during the evening hours. Thus the best locations from which to view the shower – according to Wiegert’s May-June 2011 prediction – should be Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
The shower is expected to continue to produce meteors, albeit it at a reduced level, into the North American evening of October 8. So North Americans might still have a chance to see the meteor shower.
A shower of 1,000 meteors per hour would be spectacular indeed. Woot?! Not yet.
Wiegert admits that meteor predictions are not ironclad. He said:
… you never know. Meteor showers are as difficult to predict as rain showers. The Draconids have surprised us before, and they may do so again. I’d encourage anyone outside on the night of October the 8 to look to the northern skies, just in case.
There is another major factor. The moon will be in a waxing gibbous phase on October 8. It will be in the sky – large and bright – when the sun goes down on October 8 as seen from around the world. As all meteor-watchers know, a large bright moon will drown all but the brightest meteors in its glare. That means the predicted rates of 1,000 meteors per hour will be severely diminished by the moon, no matter where you are on Earth.
The Draconid meteor shower has produced storms in the past. In 1933 and 1946, the Draconids produced “meteor storms” where shooting stars were produced at rates of 10,000 per hour or even more. Other less dramatic outbursts — where the meteor counts nonetheless ran into the hundreds per hour — occurred in 1952, 1985, and 1998. Normally, though, the Draconids are a weak shower producing perhaps 10 meteors per hour.
Let’s talk a moment about Paul Wiegert, the lone astronomer who made this prediction. Wiegert is an astronomer at University of Western Ontario. His specialty is solar system dynamics. In other words, he conducts numerical analyses of the way objects in our solar system move. He says he likes working with smaller bodies particularly: asteroids, comets and meteoroid streams. He made his announcement about the 2011 Draconids at the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) meeting of professional astronomers in Ontario May 20-June 2, 2011.
Is the prediction credible? Yes, certainly, as predictions go. This is a good year to watch the Draconids!

How to view the Draconid shower
This meteor shower really favors the northerly latitudes, but that’s not to say the Draconid meteors can’t be seen from the northern tropics.
Wherever you may reside worldwide, the best viewing of these meteors will probably be at nightfall and early evening on October 8. That’s because that’s when the radiant point for the shower – in the constellation Draco the Dragon – will be highest in the sky for the night. All other things being equal, the most meteors tend to fall when the the radiant point is highest in the sky. North of about 35 degrees north latitude – the latitude of Memphis, Tennessee – the radiant is actually circumpolar. Circumpolar means that the radiant stays above the horizon all night long. So northerly latitudes are definitely favored for the Draconids.
Locate Dragon’s eyes and radiant point for Draconid meteors
Even so, the radiant will fall downward during the night and reach its low point close to dawn, as seen from all points in the northern hemisphere. Generally, you see few – if any – meteors when the radiant of the shower falls close to the horizon. However, if the Draconids should burst into storm during the predawn hours (that’ll be in Asia and possibly Alaska on October 9, if the prediction holds), you might not see an abundance of meteors but you may see some earthgrazers – unusually bright and long meteors that go horizontally across the sky.
However, nightfall and early evening on October 8, 2011 will probably provide the greatest number of meteors. At this time, the waxing gibbous moon will be rather low in your east to southeast sky and casting long shadows. Sit in the shadow of a barn or hedgerow of trees, though with an otherwise open view of sky. This should help darken the night for meteor watching.
Comet Giacobini-Zinner spawns the Draconid meteor shower
Like most meteors in annual showers, any fiery Draconid meteors we see streaking across a dark night sky actually started out in a meteoroid stream in space – a river of icy, rocky debris – left behind in the orbit of a comet. The comet that spawns the Draconid shower is named Giacobini-Zinner. Known for over 100 years, this comet takes about 6.6 years to orbit our sun once.
Comet Giacobini-Zinner was the first comet to be examined by a spacecraft, when in 1985 the International Cometary Explorer flew through its tail, passing approximately 4,847 miles (7,800 km) from its nucleus.
A comet’s tail can extend for millions of kilometers in space, but any spectacular display of meteors on October 8 does not originate from the comet’s tail. It originates from the much-smaller comet nucleus, or core. Essentially an ice asteroid, the frozen comet nucleus partly evaporates when its orbit brings it close to the sun. At this time the comet’s tail, which is composed largely of water vapor and chemically related species, grows in size and may achieve naked-eye visibility from Earth. The vaporization process also releases copious quantities of small rocks and dust because the nucleus is far from pristine ice: it is more like a dirty city snow-bank after a long winter.
The solid rocky material produced by a comet continues to orbit the sun after its release. At this point, it has become a meteoroid stream in space. If the orbit of the meteoroid stream intersects Earth’s orbit – at a time when Earth is nearby – bits of cometary debris burn up in our upper atmosphere and produce a meteor shower. Particles no larger than a pea and which burn up at altitudes of 62 miles (100 km) are easily noticeable from the ground; in fact, this describes most meteors visible to the human eye.
Bottom line: The 2011 Draconid meteor shower might produce a meteor storm of 1,000 meteors per hour on October 8, 2011. Europe, North Africa and the Middle East are favored, but peak rates for the shower might extend into North America on the evening of October 8. There will be a large, bright moon in the sky. Its light will diminish the shower. But go outside and look anyway!

Fragmenting Michigan Meteor Fireball 07OCT2011

Email From:
Dawn G.-Freeport, MI:
I was heading east on Freeport Rd, out of the village when not quite overhead a large neon blue/green ball following 2 smaller ones shot across the sky from north to south. At first, I thought it might be the lights under a low-flying jet; but the biggest ball had a slight green tail & they all disappeared as suddenly as they had appeared. I assumed they were either parts of a satellite burning up as they entered the earth's atmospere or they were meteor debris. They were quite beautiful. This was in Freeport, Michigan at 6:45 am, on Friday October 7, 2011.     thanks for the heads up Dawn!

Kelly D.-Baden Ontario, Canada:
I am just commenting on a post I read on your site regarding a fireball sighting from someone in Freeport, Michigan this past Friday.  I live in Baden, Ontario, Canada and around the same time (6:45 on Friday October 7th) I was jogging outside when I witnessed a Blue/greenish fire ball move through the sky.  It was moving from North to South and looked fairly large(about a 1/4 the size that the moon appeared).  Just wondering if anyone knows what this was.
Kelly D     thanks for this confirmation Kelly!

***If you are searching for information about this fireball and/or witnessed it, please leave a report of what you saw at wxtx01@gmail.com Please include the date and time, the direction you were facing/driving, the direction in which the object moved (upper left to lower right etc.) approximate size and brightness compared to a full moon, color, any flashes, streaks, fragmentation and any sounds or delayed sounds such as sonic booms, hisses, sizzles etc. Thank you! Your information is vital to research/recovery efforts so please take time to report.***

Driving south on Interstate 65.  Very bright extending from 30 degrees above eastern horizon to 20 degrees above south southwest horizon. Light skipped or varied in brightness three times. Long time since I estimated magnitudes, but twice as bright as I have ever seen Venus. No sign of ionization trail, but eyes were not fully dark adapted. Brilliant green.

Michelle M.-Sarasota, FL:
large fireball approximately 8:40 over Sarasota Florida USA moving south west

Shawn-Port St. John, FL:
Walking west on Corsica ave when my wife and I noticed a large bright green fireball falling at about a 45* angle from North to South.  Duration approximately 2-3 seconds.  Fireball was visible with a consistent solid tail until it disappeared behind the tree line.

C. Clifton-Woodstock, AL:
Just saw large greenish glowing ball with a long orange tail over Woodstock Alabama at about 7:50pm it was about 200ft above the surface traveling south at a high rate of speed we were at the exit 97 on I 20/59

Jim G.-Hernando Beach, FL:at around 9:15 PM (EST), looking out over the Gulf sky on a very clear night, I saw a massive fireball with a very long green/blue tail moving north to south in steep descent.  Seemed to disappear into Gulf.  Amazing, once in a lifetime event.  What was that?

Chris E.-Tampa, FL:
Tonight, (10-6-11) at around 8:45pm I saw what seemed to be a blue meteor with a long visible tail streak across the Northwestern sky.  It moved quite slow and was very large and bright.  I watched it for around 4 seconds before it fell under the horizon.  A magnificent experience!  Did anyone else see this?

Sherry W.-Denham Springs, LA:
We saw the most beautiful meteor at 7:30pm in Denham Springs, LA in the SE sky.  It was traveling South and appeared to be just above the tree line.  Denham Springs, LA is across the Amite River from Baton Rouge, LA.  The meteor was bright red at the head and had a long green tale.  It was the brightest and largest we've ever seen.

Bradley C.-Orlando, FL:
While driving WNW in my community I saw a bright blue-green ball of light with a trailing tail falling from 45 degrees high in the sky toward the ground.  It vanished behind a tree line on the horizon.  I’ve seen meteor showers before and this was far brighter than anything I have ever seen previously.

Emily H.-Naples, FL:
I was driving North on I-75 and saw a bright white fireball/comet-looking thing; the tail was greenish white.  It looked to be traversing east to west flying low on the horizon.  It was approximately 8:45pm.

rdnkchic-Crestview, FL:
SEEN A BIG FIREBALL IN THE SKY Truely the best show ever blue/green ball with a long tail that went  from a greenish color to a yellow. It came from the north at about a 45degree and went to the south. It was around 730pm I live in crestview fl . The wife and I were sitting out front her back was to it .  I would love to see a pic of it .

Karl C.-Leaksville, MS
Tonight October 6,2011 around 7:30 pm. We saw a fire ball traveling north to south. It was red with a green tail. The tail changed colors from blue to green. It dropped behind the trees. It looked like it went into the gulf. We are in Leakesville, MS. about 40 miles north west of Mobile, AL. And 60 miles north of gulf.

Mary W.-Vidalia, GA:
Last night my husband observed an event in the sky at 8:39 PM, that he posted about on his Facebook page some minutes after the occurrence (at ca. 8:55 PM).
“I just observed one of the brightest events that I have ever seen before falling from above, out of the South, with a Westerly angle, It was very bright green with a white perimeter type halo...Shooting star? Perhaps debris falling from the atmosphere? I do know that it was ONE beautiful sight! I regret that I did not think to capture this on video...Hope that someone else saw and enjoyed it, too....”
“I failed to mention...the entire visual lasted at least 30 to 40 seconds. It was not the usual.."shooting star". It was 8:39 pm on this very CLEAR and beautiful night.....”
“It was so big and bright I actually stood up on my tractor and watched for a "solar flare" or similar effect, had it been an aircraft, once it disappeared below the tree line (point of impact). The flaming green color was mesmerizing.”
“...out of the South with a Westerly descending angle of 30 to 40 degrees is the location I experienced my visual last night.”
And in a follow-up post, this is from another friend who also saw it, at about the same time that my husband did, but possibly a minute before his sighting (ca. 8:38 PM) because she was about 5 miles away at our Wal-Mart store.
“I saw that too....it was beautiful!!!! But kinda scary at the same time...”
“The main reason it was scary to me was bc it looked like it was in the direction of Plant Hatch...but it was the most beautiful green I've ever seen...definitely the largest "shooting star" I've ever seen...and the tail was long...it seemed to have lasted a long while also...it seemed to start in the middle of the sky and kept going behind the tree line...I was at (Vidalia) walmart when I saw it...we live in the country and I've never seen anything like that...”

Angie M., Fort Walton Beach, FL, around 7:45 p.m. saw what appeared as a large greenish/bluish ball with long tail of same color shoot across the sky. Was in a restaurant parking lot and 4 other people in the parking lot saw the same thing I did. I've never seen anything like it. It was really neat! Looks like we all saw the same thing. Would love to know exactly what it was.

Large Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Ontario Canada Meteor Fireball 04OCT2011

Email From:
Karen S.-Novi, MI:
Tonight (October 4 2011)  around 8 pm we heard a boom, I went to sit outside and about 8:10 pm  I witnessed the most beautiful bright green and orange long streaking fireball shoot across the sky in the city of Novi, MI. I was in such awe to see such a beautiful thing, wondering if this was a meteor or what, it reminded me of a very brightly lit bottle rocket shooting across the sky, but there was no noise. Do you know what this was? I really would like to know if what I witnessed was indeed a meteor.

From T.J.-Bryan, OH:
On 10/04/2011  I was traveling east on state route 6 in Bryan O.H. And saw a green flash with like a red end to the green trail it only lasted a few seconds and vanished it was on the northern side of the Highway.

Kevin K.-Kitchener Ontario, Canada:
I was driving "North" along Hwy. 85 near Bridgeport Road exit and saw a very bright, long lasting meteor losing altitude, moving from West to North, in North West horizon over Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Light seemed to have terminated close to horizon. No other radio or internet reports seen or heard as of yet.
Hope this is useful.
Kevin

Roman V.-Embro Ontario, Canada:
Hi there, at approximately 7:58 pm tonight driving westbound on the 401 in SW Ontario Canada between Kitchener and Woodstock (aprox 5-6KM east of exit 250) I spotted a huge green ball to the west travelling from the south west in a northerly direction however it appeared to be losing altitude quite quick as well as fragmenting before it disappeared behind the tree line of the horizon.
I live 10miles west/Nwest of Woodstock and still being at least 20-25 minutes from home I thought it possible it may have traveled almost over my house.
More than likely it was closer to Lake Huron but no way to tell either way.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, Roman

Jill D.-Novi, MI:
At approximately 8:30pm October 4, 2011 I saw what looked like a comet or a meteor with a fiery long tail. It was moving pretty quickly and I was only able to see it for a few seconds. I am in Novi, MI and I am so curious if anyone else has seen it and if so, can u tell me what we saw!!

J.L.-Windsor Ontario, Canada:
I am located in Windsor Ontario Canada , right across the river from Detroit Michigan  ,Was watching tv  OCT 4 2011 about 8 pm  when I noted a glow from the front window which faces west. I have seen many shooting stars before & this appeared to much larger than anything I have seen , It was coming down at 45 degree angle & slower than the usual shooting star , was visible for 10 seconds or so before it went behind trees.  It looked large & very bright green there seemed to be a white halo around the edge & it was trailing white sparks , it broke into 2 pieces  both trailing white sparks. Fom my position it appeared to be heading west northwest  It was bright enough & large enough that I wonder if it impacted , surely someone saw it....

Cheryl M.-South Haven, MI:
I saw the fireball this evening (October 4, 2011) at around 8:05 pm EST.  I am in South Haven, Michigan along the Lake Michigan shoreline.  I was facing East and saw it move from upper right to lower left in the sky.  Upper left to lower right.  As it moved across the sky it moved downward.  It happened so fast but long enough to be in awe.  I questioned what I say and thought fireworks but there was no sound.    I did not hear a boom before the seeing the light.  We had just come outside 5 minutes earlier.  My biggest impression was the size of the white light ball that than streaked.  I told my son that I thought I saw green too at the time but now that a few hours have passed I'm not remembering exact details regarding the color.  Grateful to have witnessed it!  We had just come outside to check out the moon.  What an unexpected sky treat!
Thanks, Cheryl

Marc P.-South Central MI:
This evening shortly before 8p EDT, I witnessed a greenish/yellow streak like a comet in the western sky as I faced southwest in lower-mid Michigan.  It lasted for 6-8 seconds before it dissipated behind a 60' tree I was under.  It moved much slower than the usual shooting stars that I've seen and its trail was 5-7 tea the size of the moon at that time.  It was quite brilliant.  I'm quite fascinated to learn about other eyewitness accounts.  Is this an early part of the NASA predicted show of October 8??

B. Mulligan-Ontario, Canada:
Date: October 4th, 2011 Time: 8:11 EST Location: North Pelham, Ontario, Canada My wife and I were returning from an early movie and dinner and were almost home, driving due west down the road to our house. In the black sky ahead a white light suddenly appeared, much like the light on an airplane as it approaches you. It started at about 30 degrees above the horizon and descended quickly to earth at about a 45 degree angle. From our location it looked to descend from south to north. We could only see it for about one second and it disappeared behind the treeline which was fairly close. My wife and I both remarked on it; we had not seen anything quite like it before. When we arrived home I phoned the police thinking the light was indeed on an airplane that might have crashed within a few miles of us. They told me at the time they had received no other calls other than mine. I'm glad I found this site....now I can finally sleep! - BM

Jerry G.-NW OH:

I was sitting on my front porch in NW Ohio outside of Elmore when I saw a meteor coming straight down NNW of my location. It developed a tail and lasted for a couple of seconds before it went behind the trees. I live in a woods so I missed a fair amount of the view as it descended closer to the ground. I looked at my watch after I saw it and it was 8:05 PM. I did not hear anything.

Cherie B.-Livonia, MI:
I stepped out onto my patio last night and was facing west when I saw a bright light desending.  I thought it was a plane at first, but was much brighter.  Then it fragmented into 2 pieces and trailed for another couple seconds and then seemed to burn out.  I was looking for news reports this morning, and this was the only site that had any information about the sighting.  It was about 1/8 of the brightness of the moon and I didn't hear any sound.  I was curious if it was a meteor or maybe one of our many satellites up there.

Charles N.-London, Ontario Canada:
Consistent with other folks, I saw the same thing.  I have never seen anything so large moving so slowly across the night sky.  It lasted at least 5 full seconds and was moving south to north and was visible as I approached due west.  The colour was more blue than green... blue on the top, greenish in the middle and bright white on the bottom.  As it passed the horizon to the north I waited to hear the 'boom'... not sure if this was a plane or a large firework.
Immediately after, on the radio in London (FM96) many folks called in and reported the same.  Very cool.

Benjamin G.-Cleveland, OH:
peace,
I live in Cleveland, Ohio. It was approximately 7:45. I was driving westbound, and it was so HUGE it caught my eye instantly. It seemed to start as a big ball and then the streak followed behind it. It burned up in a bright greenish-blue color. It seemed to be moving West to North as it fell out of the sky. I was in my car, so I didn't hear anything at the time.
Matt P.-Rochester Hills, MI 8:05pm:
Driving home tonight I saw a streaking white light travelong west to east.  It looked like a firework shooting through the shy. It lasted several seconds then burst into several pieces.  There was a plane flying by right above it. Very strange!!
Appears I am not the only one to see it.
Michelle B.-Windsor Ontario, Canada:
Did I really see this!? Amazing!! Talking to my friend after work in the parking lot in Windsor Ontario about 8:05 or so and was distracted by a light out of the corner of my eye. I looked and pointed and asked if she had seen that. She thought it was a falling star but I told her no way, it was like a ball of flames. I told my boyfriend (who thought I was losing it) and when I woke up someone had posted this link on 0facebook! What a once in a lifetime opportunity!! So cool! How often are these seen???
Thanks for letting me relive my encounter!!
Michelle
Lisa B.-Lake Michigan "Thumb":
My sister and I were on our way home from grocery shopping near the "thumb" area of Michigan and seen the fireball. It was lower in the horizon than anything I have ever witnessed. It was traveling from the east/southeast to west/northwest. Broke into two pieces before completely burning out. Never seen anything like it before. Glad to know others also witnessed it!
Lisa J. B
Eric C.-Farmington Hills, MI:
I was standing in a parking lot last night about 8pm and a friend and I witnessed the downward streaking fireball. It was very bright and multi-colored.
We were in Farmington Hills, Michigan near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and 10 Mile Road.  The fireball was to the Northwest of us (over Milford, MI)
It seemed very close...to the point where my friend thought it was a bullet (he has seen many in his home country).  I found your website after a Google search in looking for what the streak could have been.
Best Regards,
Eric M. C
Kelcie S.-Auburn, MI:
On October 4, 2011 at about 8pm EST, I was traveling west on US-10 near Auburn, MI, and I saw a greenish-orange tail of what I assume was a meteorite to the south. It appeared to be split in two and was only visible for a few seconds. It was a little less than 45 degrees above the horizon. It moved slightly north of west and was about a third the brightness of the moon last night. Hope this observation helps! I am a bit farther north than many of your previous comments. Please let me know if you desire any further information.
Thank you!
Julie F.-West Bloomfield, MI:
Last night my daughter, my neighbor, and myself saw what looked like a meteor or shooting star travel from the east to the west shortly after 8 p.m.  We were in Clawson, Rochester, and West Bloomfield, Michigan, in the Southeastern part of the State.  It was a stunning “sign in the heavens” for us, as all three of us had just spoken to God in prayer,
Jan B.-Belle River Ontario, Canada:
Large Fireball coming from south east spotted from Belle River Ontario, lasted for few seconds, before separated into at least 3 pieces and disappeared (burned) .
Amanda W.-Novi, MI USA
A co- worker and I were leaving work at a location near the NE corner of 10 Mile & Beck in Novi, MI  at around 8/8:10 pm.  Altho I heard no sonic boom, it was my co-worker who noticed it first.  I turned to face West to just catch the tail end of a yellow – white stream in the sky before it dropped bel;ow a tree line & was no longer in sight.  Was traveling from W/NW direction (upper left to lower Right) .  My co-worker thought it was a shooting star as she has never witnessed one before J
Scott W.-Berkley, MI:
On the evening of 10/04/11 I was leaving the house around 8:05 pm in Berkley Michigan when I saw a large orange/yellow fireball in the western sky.  It had a long tail that quickly fizzled out as it appeared to fall from the sky going from what seemed the south east to north west.  It was a clear beautiful night and it was clearly visible for several seconds and was completely silent.  Not sure if it was a comet or a meteor.
Steve P.-Ypsilanti, MI
I also witnessed said meteor from Ypsilanti, MI. It was by far the largest and most impressive one I have ever seen; it appeared to be extremely close and moving straight down in the west northwestern sky before splitting into two pieces one that moved off slightly to the north and the other slightly to the south. Awesome!
Lisey S.-Unknown Location:
At around 8:00p.m saw what looked to be a meteorite in the western sky, travelling in a northerly descending direction. The projectile split into two, before burning out, and must have crashed somewhere near by. Shortly after, i heard a car alarm go off in which i assumed was hit by the fireball. (lol)
Dianne G.-Ontario, Canada:
On October 4, 2011 at approximately 8:10 pm, I was travelling west on Snyder’s Road between Petersburg and Baden (near Waterloo ON) and saw two very bright white lights in the western sky travelling in tandem at about a 45 degree angle towards the horizon.  They were visible for about 4-5 seconds before they faded.  Like another witness reported, I was concerned it was a plane going down until the lights quickly faded in the dark sky and I realized what I had seen was actually a fragmented meteorite.

Sue B.-Trenton, MI:
I was driving west on Vreeland Road toward Fort Street about 8:05 pm on the evening of October 4, 2011.  I was on the phone with my daughter who was in Monroe, Michigan at the time.  I saw the fireball/meteor and didn’t know what it was.  It seemed so low.  It was about 1/2 the size of a full moon, maybe a little smaller, but very large for a shooting star.  When I first saw it, I said, “Oh my God”.  My daughter said the same thing at the same time.  Then she said, “Shooting Star”.  I asked, “Did you see that too?”  Monroe is about 30 miles south of Trenton and we saw the same thing at the same time.  We couldn’t believe we both seen it at the exact same time.  It was like a large fireball...it only lasted a couple of seconds from when I seen it. It was travelling north west, pretty low in the sky.  It appeared to have broken in two, then it disappeared.  It was yellowish with a bluish/greenish tint around it.  Hard to remember now.  I listened to the news this morning but heard nothing about it.  I then searched the internet for information on it and found this site.  Very, very amazing.  I’ve never seen anything like it before.  Crazy!

Kathleen S.-Cincinnati, OH:
Hello...I'm writing in regards to the fireball/meteor I witnessed on October 4, 2011
I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and was traveling westbound on US 52 (along the Ohio River).  I witnessed a huge fireball/meteor that appeared to my North and was traveline in a west/ possible SW direction, hard to say exactly as US 52 curves along the river so I'm not sure if I was traveline due west or possible north at that particular section of the highway.  It was the largest meteor/fireball I had ever witnessed and lasted for a long time.  I was able to tell my daughter, "look at that shooting star" and she had time to look up from the back seat and witness it before it disappeared.  It definitely had me curious because I immediately went home and searched the local news stations and googled meteor showers. Thanks

Brian M.-Grayslake, IL:
On 10/04/2011 at approximately 7pm CST my wife and I were travelling Eastbound on Center Street (Cty A27) at Route 45 in Grayslake IL (60030) when we saw a blue/green fireball with a long trail descending at high speed.  I first noticed it at around 60 degrees above the horizon, almost straight east, and moving towards the horizon in a northeasterly direction.  It appeared to split into two pieces at about 40 degrees above horizon, with the smaller piece appearing to break off to the right from my perspective.  It then disappeared from my sight about 20 degrees above the horizon, just above the treeline from my perspective. We were located about 10 miles straight west from the western shore of Lake Michigan, almost equidistant between the heart of Milwaukee WI and Chicago IL.
I too thought it might be a fast moving plane that was crashing relatively nearby.  Really glad it wasn't!
Thanks for the great site!

Deanna C.-Columbus, OH:
I was traveling North on St. Rt. 315 North of Columbus, OH, facing the suburb of Delaware, OH, a few minutes after 8:00 p.m. on 10/4/11.  I saw a bright green light appearing to travel directly straight down from the sky toward the road in front of me.  Impossible to tell how far away, but it was very large.  I had thought it had to hit somewhere in Delaware, OH simply due to its size, but looking over these posts and the locations, I may be very mistaken.  Beautiful indeed, but I was pretty sure I was crazy.  :)

Hi Jim,
Attached are a couple images. First is the stacked image, consisting of 197
30 second frames. This image has been photoshopped a bit, by cloning
out some distracting automobile light trails on the road in front of our house
in a couple frames. The second one is the frame that contains the trail of
the meteor. It occurred at 4:24 AM eastern time. I was very fortunate in
that the battery in the camera went dead 2 frames after the meteor.
These were shot with a Nikon D300 with a 12-24mm Tokina wide angle lens.
I live near Conway, NC which is near the VA border and about 25 miles east
of I-95. Hope you find the images interesting.   THANK YOU KEN !!

Photo Analysis From Bill Cooke-NASA-MSFC-MEO-Huntsville, AL

From the non-star trail image, I was able to get a crude astrometric fit and obtained the following for the meteor:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL EYEWITNESS REPORTS...
Allegany Radio Corporation
Magic 100.5 Cumberland, MD:  According to Allegany County 9-1-1 officials at about 4:30 this morning folks throughout Western Maryland awoke to a sonic boom created by a meteorite that moved through the area. 12 calls were made to Allegany County 9-1-1 beginning at about 4:22 am from Frostburg to Oldtown. Callers reported hearing a loud boom and seeing a blue or green light flashing through the sky. County 9-1-1 officials from around West Virginia claimed they received calls about feeling the sonic boom from Carpendale, Capn Bridge and Wardensville. Early reports are that the meteorite may have allegedly crashed somewhere in Virginia. But Virginia Emergency Management officials say they have had no meteorite reports. NASA officials have been unable to confirm the reports at this point.

Sandra K.-Newport News, VA:
I witnessed a fireball/meteor this morning at appx 0422 am while driving north on I664 in Newport News, VA.  It was the largest meteor I have ever seen and must have been close.  It was traveling east and was bright blue/green and flashed brightly as it appeared to hit the atmosphere.

Keri M.-Gainsville, VA:
At 4:25am this morning (October 4, 2011) I was facing northwest, I believe and saw a fireball going from west to east about the size of a soccer ball.  It had a tail of fire that was red and yellow and it sizzled. It was bright like a firework going off. The sizzling got louder then it disappeared.

C. Price-Sterling, VA:
Near sterling virginia, 4:25AM oct. 4 2011 i saw a huge green ball growing in size and brightness with a short fire colored tail of sparks.  It looked larger than the moon and then disappeared from view behind a biulding and then   the sky lit up with 5 green flashes.  It must have exploded, but i heard no sound.

Amanda M.-Cumberland, MD:
I saw your post apparently it was seen all over western Maryland as well

Winnie Z.-Germantown, MD:
I was out walking the dog at 4:10-20 a.m. in Montgomery county Md. On 10/04/2011. Saw a fireball with bright white and blue trailing , going from east to west….lower than a shooting star or meteor showers that I have seen !! Wow ! My husband was walking and saw the same thing. We live at: (address on file) Germantown , Md.

Rick M.-Loudoun Co, VA:
I was facing West while jogging in Loudoun County, VA.  Object moved left to right.  Blue/green/white body with light Orange to red tail.  Much bigger than the biggest star, maybe 1/4 the size of a full moon.  No sound, and it appeared to originate in the sky.  Rick M

Bill H.-South Anne Arundel County MD:
I saw a bright(extremely) flash in the sky this morning at aproxx 4:20 while walking my dog. I was in South Anne Arundel County Maryland facing WNW when this a ocurred. After the the bright flash(it lit the west river up like it was daylight) I saw a meteor arcing towards the north like it was coming down on the eastern shore of maryland. Thats the best I can describe it..................Bill

C. Pew-Salem, NJ:
I was travelling southbound in a car around 4:20 a.m. and saw a green fireball quickly falling from the sky and appeared to be going east to west. Originally thought it might have been some sort of flare or firework, but as it got closer to the ground started throwing off orange sparks just before it went below the horizon. Coolest thing I have ever seen.

Stewart W.-Colleen, VA:
Yes, my wife and I witnessed the fireball, this morning, 04 October 2011.
We were driving north on U.S. Rt 29, in Nelson County VA (near Colleen VA).  The time was
approximately 4:20 a.m.  My wife spotted the meteor, as it traveled in a southwest to northeast direction.  As I was driving, it was in a roughly at an 11:00 position to me, when spotted. I would have to guess,  that from when we spotted the meteor, until it ended, it may have covered an 80 degree arc through the sky.  It was visible for approximately 8 seconds.
When I spotted the meteor, it lit up the WHOLE northern night sky!  Even lower level cloud cover. It had a tail wider than a jet contrail.  Much wider than the International Space Station flyovers, that I've watched.  The tail looked liked smoke trailing behind it, it was so broad.
After watching the meteor for about 5 seconds, the fireball started skipping in and out of the atmosphere. It skipped I believe 3 times, with red sparks and bright flashes, as it reentered the atmosphere each time. Other than the sparks, I couldn't describe the colors very well, since I am Red/Green color deficient. Sorry!
Hope this helps!
Charles W

Donald S.-Gettysburg, PA:
This morning leaving for work at about 4:20 AM, I saw a big flash of light that lasted about a second. It was like a lighting strike without sound. When I looked in the sky I saw what I thought was a meteor racing across the sky east to west. It seemed quite large compared to others I have seen. I just asumed it exploded when it hit our atmosphere. I live just west of Gettysburg PA. If you find out what it was, could you let me know?

Ken S.-On The Road In VA:
4:22 OCT 4 2011  As I was driving on 70 heading west towards Fredrick the sky got bright for about 3 to 5 seconds in that time I saw a blue ball with a tail crashing down. I have never seen anything like it in my life.

Fred C.-Aberdeen, MD:
At 4:23 AM I was operating a southbound freight train near Aberdeen MD. on Amtracks Northeast Corridor. I suddenly saw a bright flash that I thought was an arc from the overhead catenary wires. Looking up at the southern sky, I saw a very bright object moving east to west trailing blue/ green lights. It was the most brilliant meteor/shooting star I had ever seen. Couldn't believe its speed and intensity. Awesome!!
Fred

Randall J.-Frederick Co, MD:
At approximately 4:20AM I was riding in a vanpool van in Hwy 340 in Frederick county,MD, about 1 mile east of the Brunswick exit. Through the side window looking west I saw two bright flashes of light, the second one being somewhat dimmer. The light was above a low cloud deck but the clouds where well lit up by the flashes. My first impression was lightning but it was too cold for that. I then guessed it was a transformer explosion of some sort on South Mountain. It wasn't until I arrived at work and heard other people from all over the area witnessing a fireball.

Claudio D.-Truck Driver:
I was heading south on i-95 towards dc around 4:30ish when I saw a blue flash( brighter than lightning)  followed by a orange tail going from east to west and desapering in the horizon...the whole thing probably lasted about 3-4 seconds but it was real cool!!!!

Dave and Melody-New Holland, PA:
This morning around 4 15 am I was sitting in a parking lot in New Holland Pa facing ssw,the light/light flashes I saw were bright enough to see them in my peripheral vision. The light/light flashes I saw were due west of my position, they were just above the tree line and it first resembled sort of a strobing effect, two to three quick flashes. No sound was heard, David

I live in Northwet Ohio. At about 04:24 hrs was was heading home when a saw a bright flash and then a big green fireball with a tail in the eastern sky. I see most reports were from PA, MD area.  The ball of fire was so big I actually thought it was only a few counties away.

I see most reports were from PA, MD area.  The ball of fire was so big I actually thought it was only a few counties away. I was traveling to the east. The fire ball moved from the right to the left at about 2oclock in the sky. before I found this site I actually thought it was only a few counties away. Not sure but I think it was a flash the first got my attention. It happened and was moving so fast.

Jack B.-South Annville Township, Lebanon County, PA:Traveling to work south on state rt.322 west, just passingthe intersection with state rt. 934  seen a white/blue flash at thehorizon in the southwest/western sky. Was low on the horizon about tree level. Frommy vantage point I thought an accident might of occurred at three mile islandpower plant. I’ve seen transformer explosions before---looked like it mayhave been the same. I’m sure of the time because I had my satellite radio on and after seeing the flash, I checked the time.

Deep South Meteor Fireball ? 03OCT2011

Email From:
Land Solutions-Tuscaloosa, AL:
I live in Tuscaloosa, Alabama and was out walking the dog Sept. 3rd at 7:30pm and saw what appeared to be an orange ball of light  hovering in the sky. I was facing south and it looked to traveling south east. As a few minutes passed, it looked like it was on fire or a ball of fire. It slowly went away but as it did it changed from blue to white. I tried to get a picture with my phone but was not successful. I really have not given any thoughts about UFO's but after seeing this object, I began to wonder.  Anyone else in the south witness anything like this?

TEXAS DAYLIGHT FIREBALL

Additional Eyewitnesses Needed On This Daylight Event !!

Email From:
Reagan R.- Lufkin, TX
10/1/2011 at 8:25 a.m., south of Diboll and north of Corrigan, TX.  Sighted while driving south on Highway 59. Bluish white with a slight green with distinct tail moving east to west. Became visible a little before the 11 o'clock position and began to diminish by the 2 o'clock position.  Tail began to diminish and object seemed to give off or break into orange pieces and disappear.  If anything made it to the ground it would most likely be in heavily forested area.  Not having witnessed anything in the daytime like this before (nor any at night that were anywhere near this big or bright) it seemed very low in the sky.  Not being more experienced at estimating these things it seemed to be only a few thousand feet away and was extremely bright. Witnessed by myself, my wife and couple in vehicle following us.

W.P.-Southwest LA 8:00-9:00am CDT
I saw an orange fireball with a long tailed, bright blue streak traveling through the sky, from east to west.  Just before, it passed from my range of vision, over the horizon, it broke into two parts.  Each part became an individual fireball and both appeared to burn out during their descension.  I was facing southwest, alone in my deer stand, when I initially saw the fireball appear in the west.

I was driving to work this morning om I45 South at appr. 540am. I saw what I thought to be a falling star. It started out White and falling towards the skyline but soon turned to look like it was on fire as if an engine had burned out as it went down. Ellington Field, Hobby Airport are the only two strips I am aware of. I watched the news but have seen nothing reported. Space Junk??? I don't know, all I do think I know is that it did make it thru the atmosphere, maybe landed in the gulf, Galveston??

I saw a slow moving (faster than a low flying airplane) bright white fireball at about 9:25 PM 9/28/2011. It was less than 30 degrees above the horizon (tho I was on a hill) larger than a BB but smaller than a pencil eraser. I was facing east and it traveled parallel to the horizon south to north without sound. Just as it passed the tree line to the northeast it was bright enough to illuminate the nearby trees. Me and two buddies of mine were wade fishing on the north west Trinity Bay next to the spillway early Saturday morning. We got on the water around 4:45 a.m. and about an hour into our trip we all three saw this red flash of light coming toward the ground. We only saw it for a second. It was Red and looked like a huge falling star. It seemed so close that I was waiting for the smoke to come up from the impact. I was facing the South East, toward Wildlife Refuge or East Bay.  It was coming down toward the Lower left of the view. Didnt hear any sound. Only saw a streak of red.

Hey there! Please bear with me, this is my first time seeing and reporting anything like this.
Was at home watch TV with adult daughter.Large (4'x10') front window was open, we both saw a bright blue light flash. The light flashed once brightly, then 2 times faster and not quite as bright (but still freakishly bright). We jumped up-a bit freaked out- and went outside. We didn't hear anything odd.We didn't smell anything odd and none of our neighbors came outside. Our front window faces west. The flash of light seemed to happen kind of north-west.My daughter likened it to a "giant playing with an LED flashlight"
hope this helps

UARS Journey Comes To An End 23SEP2011

NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, or UARS, Likely No More

Update #15Sat, 24 Sep 2011 01:46:42 AM MDT
NASA’s decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite fell back to Earth between 11:23 p.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 23 and 1:09 a.m. EDT Sept. 24. The Joint Space Operations Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California said the satellite penetrated the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean. The precise re-entry time and location are not yet known with certainty.

LAST SIGHTINGS OF UARS? Observers in central Texas saw UARS streaking overhead (but not disintegrating) at 8:18 PM CDT on Sept. 23rd. It was spotted again over western Colorado at ~9:46 pm CDT ("Still intact, but tumbling," says observer Scott Sheriff) and again over Minnesota at 9:55 pm CDT. Since then, however, no observers have reported seeing the doomed satellite. NASA's estimated window for re-entry (between 11:45 p.m. Sept. 23 and 12:45 a.m. Sept. 24 EDT) has passed, so UARS might be no more.

Gregg S.Cristian County, MO:My brother and I experienced something which may be related to the TX fireball. Last night we were camping out in an area of southern Christian County Missouri miles from any towns or cities. On September 23, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m. CDT we saw repeated bright flashes of light in the night sky and heard what sounded like sonic booms repeatedly for approximately 5 or 10 minutes. The flashes seemed to come from over the horizon and were not viewed directly. They were bright white light and seemed to strobe somewhat. It appeared to be orignating from an area directly north of our location. We first suspected that a fireworks display was occuring in or near the town of Ozark, Missouri but we discounted that explanation because we were many miles south of Ozark and likely wouldn't see or hear fireworks from such a distance. We also considered whether it might be the NASA UARS satellite reentering earths atmosphere. It was quite a unique experience. I questioned others about the event and was told that a friend's child experienced the same event along with a group of other highschool students while attending an outdoor highschool function in Springfield, MO. Please feel free to contact me with any follow-up questions.
