Loud Booms Heard And A Green Meteor Observed From El Paso Texas 9FEB2011 19:24 MST (02:24 UTC)...
by Jim Gamble-ELPALLSKY
At 7:24 pm MST (local) time Wed. 9FEB2011, a loud boom and subsequent rumble were heard as I stepped outside from my home in east El Paso, TX. The booms seemed to emanate from the north-northeast. Within 30 seconds, I observed a small green meteor of approximately -1 magnitude and lasting 1 to 2 seconds through Canis Major to my south-southeast. I am looking at the possibility that a larger meteor event may have occured just prior to the booms, possibly to my east or northeast. While it is possible that the booms and meteor passage were coincidental, and that the booms may not be meteor related, I nonetheless am asking anyone in the vicinity who may have heard them to post to this site. I will continue to investigate and post updates. Thank you.

Fremont, California arrived from google.com on "elp allsky " by searching for oakland, ca+meteorite.

E-mail From Anonymous...Just this morning (02.08.11 at approx. 4) am I saw a very fast, very brief, "shooting star" like phenomenon over Oakland except that it was much larger than the normal, narrow track of an incoming meteorite (approximately the width of a marble held at arm's length) and it's streak was much faster. I would not have been surprised to hear a large boom from Berkeley it seemed so close. The only thing that I can conclude was that for it to have been a object burning up while coming in atmosphere and to be that far away, it would have had to be extremely large object that was moving at extraordinary speed (a small object would not have "lit up" like that so close to the ground.) Anybody else see this thing?

Meteor News...Bright Green Fireball Observed Over NM 7FEB2011...Of Course!

Visual From D. Worthington ABQ...
At 5:09 AM local (MST) this morning, Feb. 7, from Edgewood New Mexico, approx 30 Miles East of Albuquerque, I saw a large fireball streaking due South. It was very bright and large, had a greenish tint and appeared to break into 2-3 pieces just before it burnt out, approx 5 degrees above my local horizon. I thought it was going all the way to the horizon (or ground), but did not quite make it. This was large and slower moving in appearance than typical meteors, I am assuming space debris re-entry?
Did anyone else report this? It was pretty significant in appearance, did not appear to be your typical meteor. As a long time licensed Amateur Radio Operator that has participated in Meteor Scatter communication and someone that typically gets up to watch the meteor shower and general astronomical events, this was a unique object.
From Sandia National Labs ABQ...
Early this morning (Feb. 7th, 2011), at 12:10:23 UT (05:10:23 MST) our Bldg. 890 camera recorded a fireball nearly due south and very low to the horizon.  So, I'm guessing it may have been quite close to your camera.  Coordinates were;  Begin:  Az 184, El 8 degrees; End:  Az 181, El 2 degrees.  Duration was about 4 seconds, with a bright flare at the end.
From Thomas Ashcraft Near Santa Fe NM
I did not get it on Sentinel as it was in a masked area and it is only faint and unimpressive on my secondary video.  But I am attaching it in any case.

Meteor News...New Mexico Fireball 6FEB2011

From Sandia National Labs ABQ...
Last night, at 21:31:00 MST on Feb 6th, 2011 (04:31:00 UT on Feb. 7th), camera recorded a fireball that appeared to be coming nearly straight toward the camera, in that its motion was small considering its duration (more than 3 seconds).  Coordinates were;  Begin:  Az 103, El 57 degrees;  End:  Az 93, El 57 degrees.
Let me know if your camera recorded either of these.  Thanks.

Meter Class Asteroid 2011CQ1 Narrowly Misses Earth 4FEB2011 Only Hours After Discovery......

Don Yeomans and Paul Chodas
NASA/JPL Near-Earth Object Program Office
February 4, 2011
Asteroid 2011 CQ1 was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on February 4 and made a record close Earth approach 14 hours later on February 4 at 19:39 UT (14:39 EST). It passed to within 0.85 Earth radii (5480 km) of the Earth's surface over a region in the mid-Pacific. This object, only about one meter in diameter, is the closest non-impacting object in our asteroid catalog to date. Prior to the Earth close approach, this object was in a so-called Apollo-class orbit that was mostly outside the Earth's orbit. Following the close approach, the Earth's gravitational attraction modified the object's orbit to an Aten-class orbit where the asteroid spends almost all of its time inside the Earth's orbit.
As is evident from the diagram, the close Earth approach changed the asteroid's flight path by about 60 degrees. Because of their small size, object's of this size are difficult to discover but there is likely to be nearly a billion objects of this size and larger in near-Earth space and one would expect one to strike Earth's atmosphere every few weeks on average. Upon striking the atmosphere, small objects of this size create visually impressive fireball events but only rarely do even a few small fragments reach the ground.
